I have a ’77 O’day 20 with the original through hull fittings – there are two, one for the sink/ice chest and 1 for the cockpit drain. I want to replace them, but am reluctant to fix something that isn’t broken (especially something that could sink the boat if not done properly!). I would appreciate any tips or suggestions relative to removing the existing fittings, what to install as replacements, how to install them, etc. Also, any suggestions as to what type of flexible tubing to use as replacements. Thanks.

Mark, Check out this site and click on to "Tools and Techniques" in the left hand column. Replacing these fittings aren't such a big project provided that you use a good grade of regular boat caulking. Don't use silicone though. Have someone hold the new fitting from turning while you tighten the fiber nut. Just snug it up but not too tight. Wait a couple of days for it to set up, then have someone hold it to keep it from moving, while you tighten it up some more. As for the hoses; you can use the type of plastic hose that they sell in the hardware stores for the sink and icebox drain. For the self-bailing hose replacement, use a clear, re-enforce hose that can be purchased in the hardware store also. You should be able to use the old Stainless Steel hose clamps, or buy new ones. You don't need to apply anything to the nipples. Just slide the hose all the way on, and tighten the clamps. Good luck with that! Joe
