Through Hull Problem: C30

Yesterday, I was looking around the boat and trying to catalog all of my through-hulls, and found what I thought was the raw water cooling through hull, on the port side just aft of the lower access hatch under the sink. (Remember, there's a higher access plate on the foward face of the bulkhead, which gives access to the sink plumbing; the lower access plate is outboard of the forward engine cover.) So, anyway, I located this through-hull, and it was turned off. Which worried me, if it's the engine cooling through-hull. So I turned it on. And immediately heard the sound of running--or shall I say, flooding--water. And then the sound of the bilge pump. So I turned the through-hull off and tried to figure out where this hose should go. I was limited in the time I could spend, so I didn't finish my investigations. I'll have to go back up to the boat and spend some quality time on my stomach to figure this out. In the meantime, I am taking the awe-inspiring step of asking all my fellow C30 owners to take a second shot at me. So: ... (1) Do you have any idea what this problem hose would be and (2) WHERE would you suspect I would find the raw water intake for the engine?

raw water intake

Brad, On my 91 Catalina 30 the raw water intake is on the port side of the engine under the seat/engine cover. It is below the raw water filter. Tom

Raw water for sink?

On my 81 C30 there is a raw water through hull for the galley sink in the same vicinity as the engine thru hull. It is connected to a whale hand pump that is notorious for short lifespans. As such, mine does not work & I have thought of removing it as I have plenty of freshwater capacity for dishes etc. Maybe the previous owner did this on your boat and failed to cap the through hull valve, letting water run out when opened. Look about 10" to Port of the Fwd end of your engine for the raw water through hull. Good luck!

My 1981 C-30

On my 81, there are two through-hulls outboard of the engine on the port side, forward of the galley bulkhead. The first, closest to the engine is the raw water intake. The second, which has been de-activated on mine, may have been a freshwater intake for the sink footpump which is now plumbed to the water tank.

C30 Tech Manual drawing

At the link below, from the '85 C30 (Mk. I) Owner's Manual, shows the locations of the factory-installed through-hulls, and could be helpful to you.

Thru holes

Under the sink/engine area on my 1986 C30 are three thru-hulls, all on the port side of the engine. 1. The sink drain - in the aft part of that area - next to the muffler. 2. The raw water intake - forward part of the area and it has a strainer just upstream. 3. Macerator pump outlet - five or six inches from the raw water intake (I've disconnected the macerator and use it for the A/C cooling water inlet) Hope this helps.

Thanks

Thanks, everyone. I will print out your comments and take them up to the boat to see what, exactly, I have.
