Going thru a checklist of items to service this spring, I notice my throttle/shifter cables are getting a bit stiff and being 11 yrs old I was thinking to replace them now on my terms. Has anyone done this and how difficult is it? I am wondering if I might want to send this job out to the boatyard? Your thoughts??

Thanks Bob.

Bob it is really not a hard job. I did mine. You just have to fish the cable down through the pedestal then back through the aft berth and down to the engine. I led a messenger line down through when I pulled the old cable just in case. Then measured it and replaced it from WM for 45$. Took me a couple of hours.

Good luck

Make Sure ...

..that you check the cables when they are not repeat not hooked up to the engine and transmission - many times it is the throw arm(s) on the engine that are at fault and the cables are OK.

Replacement of Tranmission cable

I have purchased a 1989 30 ft Hunter and the transmission cable has recently broke at the Clevis at the top of the steering column. I have disconnected it at the transmission and found that in the steering column the cable sleeve is held in place by a clamp that can not be excessed from the top after removal of the compass. Before I continue on does the pedistal have to be completely removed to replace this cable? If so how to I get to the clamp to remove teh cotter pin to pull the cable through. Maybe I am overlooking something here. Has anyone else ran into this problem before?

Rob: I am not sure which pedestal you have, but there is a screw on the forward side of the Y/S Merriman pedestals. It holds a bracket in place. You may be able to unscrew this screw to loosen the bracket.

The trick is to get the cable housing back under the bracket when replacing them.

Personally I would also replace the throttle cable at the same time, but that is your choice.

I found one trick

Replaced my cables this weekend. The trick for me was to pull both the throttle and the shift cable up after removing the bracket nut on the front of the column. You have to disconnect the engine end of both cables and remove tie wraps first.

Then I found that the previous owner had used 8inch bend radius cable instead of the 4 inch and had routed the cables through the wrong holes in the bottom of the column. Had to pull the ped to sort it all out. Good news is that I was able to fix the broken compas light wire by doing this

That is exactly what I did was disconnect the throttle and transmission cable at the engine end and then losen the bracket in the Pedistal that holds it in place. I can not pull either cable up, they act like there is another clamp lower in the Pedistal. I will call Edson since it is the manufacture of the Pedistal and see if they have any suggestions before I remove the Pedistal to sort this out. Thanks again for your suggestion
