Throttle slows down by itself ??

I started noticing the throttle would back off (slow down) on long stretches of motoring. This is on Seanorita, a 1981 H-33 Cherubini, with a Yanmar 20 and an Edson pedestal mounted original throttle. At first I thought the loss in rpm was in the engine, then finally realized the throttle was backing down on its own. Is there any kind of adjustment to prevent this?

Inside the binnacle there's

an adjustment screw. Get the drawing/picture in the manaul, www.edsonmarine.com

Take the binnacle apart and you will see the cable clamp there.

Maybe in the pedestal, maybe not.

The Edson pedestal on my H37C is not where the "clamp" is located. Rather it is on the cable closer to the engine. And it is exactly that, a clamp. It is a 'U'-shaped bracket with a screw that puts pressure between the cable housing and the cable(wire). Pretty simple but effective. See the following thread:

Thanks for the info and link to the archive on the subject.
I will try a couple recommendations when I get back aboard in Dec., but at least I now know what I'll be looking for.

Friction stop

In older boats the friction stops on the handles become worn. Edson pedestals are still in production but for some of the others replacement parts are not available or very hard to find. A simple fix is to wedge a piece of carboard against the lever. Take it a step further and tie a string to the wedge and cover it with waterproof tape. Tie a loop and let it hang on the lever and that way it will always be handy. Sailed with one (the same one)for many years.

Check the throttle lever at the engine

I was having the same problem on my yanmar 27 I had a leak where the raw water enters the heat exchanger, it caused some rust, and binding of the lever at the injector pump control.

I tool the cable off the lever (It comes off with just a small carter key and a washer) used some penetrating oil to loosen the lever, then sprayed some lithium grease over the rod as it enters the injector pump. I haven't had any more problems with the throttle backing off.

If you don't see any rust at this point follow the suggestions of the others on this post.

I have this problem also. I think it was worsened by the addition of a new longer and fancier throttle lever that Edson sells. The previous owner had added it just prior to selling the boat. Currently I have a bungee cord wrapped around the binnacle to provide some added friction...guys...stop laughing...at least it isn't duct tape :naughty:
