I have a capri 26 1991 with a Universal M 2-12 engine that began to run funny last week end. On neutral, it runs great , as soon as i put it in gear, at 1000 - 1200 rpm. it begins to run up and down, from 1000 to 1500 rpm. and shaking around. We' ve been motoring 35 hrs. in the last week and no problem. If I increase the speed, it is less obvious but still there. I have a new shaft. balanced prop but I'm not shure about the alignment. could this have something to do with it cause over 2000 rpm I can feel vibrations that will increase with the speed.Could the misalignment effect the engine running smothly. The day before it all began I poured some Racor product to avoid the growth in the fuel tank like I always does . Could this hurt?

If your engine runs fine at idle & out of gear then it is likely an issue with resistance in the running gear. But all engines perform differently when under load as they cannot speed up as fast due to resistance. I would check your throttle linkage for a loose spring or binding, as it sounds like your engine is "hunting" around up and down at various speeds. If the throttle linkage tension isn't constant it can cause this. The constant vibration of the motor contributes to retaining screws & springs wanting to work themselves loose. If this does not fix the problem, then talk to whomever did your shaft work. Make sure that the stuffing box isn't excessively hot while running, as it could cause binding if its not lubricated or if the shaft is not aligned correctly. But if the engine & trans. weren't removed & the cutless bearing is original, then the shaft alignment should not really change. Most problems that I hear about shafts is overheating at the stuffing box because they aren't getting enough lubrication (ie: seals or packing are too tight).
My 2 cents worth. Good luck.

thanks jrowan i have a new shaft . balanced prop and a new cutlass bearing. i did the alignment myself and i tought every thing was ok. my stuffing box is dripping enough but i did not change the old coupling on the shaft and i've noticed some black dust beneath the engine last week. must come from there since i had 2 loose bolts on the coupling. could the vibrations i have cause enough resistance to slow the engine at low speed since i feel it less when i put more gaz on the engine. thanks again

Hi,

Could be possible that you have algae accumulated on the prop and shaft.
At this time of the year, there are a lot of them.
If leave on neutral and rev up the engine to about 1600 rpm, does it stay steady ?
or make the same symptoms ?

The shaft was damaged by a bad coupling that i've changed for a new one , got the shaft repaired and re-aligned and now it is running smoother than before . Thanks for your help Patrice
