My 1980 Hunter 27 has the Yacht Specialties wheel steering with the gearshift and throttle levers on the pedestal. The engine was refitted in 1991 by previous owner with a Yanmar 1GM-10. In the six years we have owned her, the throttle lever has always been too loose. It would not stay in position at higher engine speeds. I could find no tension adjustment either at the engine side nor at the lever assembly, so I have used a bungee on the lever to add tension. Not elegant but it works, though I would prefer a more permanent solution. Have I missed a tension adjustment somewhere? Would adding washers at the lever assembly solve this? Maybe someone has been down this road and can help. Also, the lever must be pulled toward the STERN to accelerate. That seems counterintuitive -- was that normal with this setup or did someone reverse something? I have looked at the coupling for the lever and cable in the binacle but not sure if there is room there to reverse it.

Adjustment screw is under the compass.
Jon: There is a small set screw under the compass. It is typically a nylon screw that you can temporaily tighten down to add some tension. My experience was that it works for a while an then need to be readjusted again. An easier solution is to get a J Clamp that attaches on the throttle cable. These are very easy to adjust. I posted some pictures in the photo forum on this subject many moons ago. How I fixed mine
I have a 1981 H-27 and had the same problem when I put a new engine in I contacted Edson about the problem. First they sent me a new handle that didn't fit. I then called and explained the problem. They then sent me a new shaft that easly went into the pedistal. Now it looks new and works great. Cost was less than $100.

Trottle Lever Adjustment
FWIW, I had the same problem and fixed it with a simple wire clamp from Home Depot for less than a buck. It ain't "marine grade" but the price was right and it works.

Thanks for the comments. I think my cable actually has a Morse brake on it as your photos show Steve, but I never realized what it was for. It's down near the engine -- I'll take a look when I get over to the boat (we keep her in Cambridge, Md., an hour away. Still need to figure out if there's a way to reverse the lever so pushing forward makes the engine go faster (it's the opposite now).

That should also be no problem
If your YS pedestal is like mine, just unbolt the bronze lever inside. It'll be mounted pointing to the stern. Re-bolt it pointing to the bow. (or vis-versa) The hard part might be readjusting the cable clamp that holds the sheath stationary. Mine is held by a screw seen from outside, at the rear of the pedestal tube. It is connected to a clamp inside. The only way to access the clamp is to remove the quadrant and reconnect the cable from below. You'll need a helper to tighten the screw while you hold the cable. (unless you have really long arms) My set-screw tensioning the throttle lever has never loosened up since new. (86) It is stainless with a nylon face. Sounds like you don't need it. Good luck.
