throttle handle

I have a H27 1978. The throttle handle slips. I have removed the casing and handle and have found the metal bar that attaches the handle to the cable mount has worn and rounded edges. See the photo. Can a replacement be orderd from Hunter or is it an after market product that differs with each boat? Any ideas would be very appreciated. Steve

Who manufactured the pedestal?

Call Hunter & see what brand of pedestal was installed when your boat was built. Our 79 H30 has an Edson pedestal & they seem to be very customer service oriented. At any rate, once you know who made your pedestal you can get the right parts.

Repair it.

I would take it to my local welding shop for an estimate. I think it could be built up and the flats ground back in. Better than new maybe. About $20. here in Canton.

Try a wedge

We have the same problem. We use a small square wedge of hard foam neatly covered with plastic tape. We velcro it to the steering pedestal and have a string tied to it to avoid loss. You position the throtle lever and then wedge it to stay in place. It is a clean inexpensive solution and you can quickly get use to using it.

I recognize that as a cockpit mounted throtle lever, should have a shift lever behind it.I don't think the are available anymore. West sells a single lever throtle/shift lever for about 200.00 You'll have to replace the shift and throtle cables. The original cable for that lever is about 5/16" and NLA. Go with a Teleflex 3300 or 33C cable.

Been there

I had the same failure on my Hunter 30 3 years ago. The manufacturer is out of business. The shaft that your having trouble with is a standard sized hex stock, the original is brass, but you can get it stainless. A machinist will have to make a couple of modifications on a lathe to the stock once it's cut to length. Bring in the old one. I think I paid $75 for the material and the labor. (where's YOUR machine shop Ed? In the 1970's?)I checked into going to a new controller (single lever for gear shift and throttle) but found the parts alone with required cable would have been about $300) I also would have had to contend with marrying the new cable to the old Yanmar. My relationship with that friendly beast under the cockpit is such that we only embrace when absolutely necessary at this point.
