Throttle/Gear Controls

I have a Johnson 9.9 longshaft mounted on the transom of my 1978 Hunter 27. While it's performance is a vast improvement over the "dead" Renault that was replaced by the PO, there's a problem that I'm sure someone on the list has solved. Is there any kind of throttle and shift "kit" that will allow me to set engine speed and shift gears from inside the cockpit such that I don't have to lean over the transom to regulate speed/gears while motoring or docking? Steering is via tiller. My previous boat, a Columbia 24 Contender, had remote steering/throttle/shift controls, but was as ugly as sin what with cables all over the place. I'm seeking something that will minimize the numerous contortions I have to display when I want to motor, while complimenting the appearance of the vessel! Thanks in advance . . .

how does that work?

my yanmar still works.. but I am lake erie with a lot of seaweed.. Having something that you can swing up and clean would be nice. how does it mount to the transom? Is the transom reinforced somehow? thanks R. Paquin

ob mount

R. Paquin, there's a heavy duty transom mount unit that through-bolts to the transom and the o/b is on a plate that raises and lowers. Check West Marine/Defender/Boat US for the assembly. No additional reinforcement was necessary. ns

Remote Control

Remote control assemblies are readily available for your Johnson 9.9. Get the accessories catalog from Johnson. Your dealer more likely than not will know next to nothing about this. They should have exactly what you're looking for. If that doesn't serve your needs get the Morse catalog. They have several very nice bulkhead mount single lever controls which would work very nicely for you. The control would mount in the cockpit and the only cable you would see would be where it comes through the transom. Take a long walk around a few marinas and you will undoubtedly see waht I'm talking about.

success!

Since my main concern was maintaining constant throttle speed as it's really not a problem to change gears, I found a part in a small marine engine repair shop. The kid behind the counter even took me into the service area and disassembled a tiller handle to show me how to install the part. Went to the boat, disassembled the twist grip throttle assembly, slid on the new doo-hickey and voila, success! Part cost $18. With remote systems starting in the $200 range, I can live with bending over to switch gears!
