The engine throttle on my Hunter 27 after setting a certain engine rpm will all by itself reduce the rpm down to 2000 rpm. How can the throttle be adjusted?

Friction Screw

If you have an edson pedestal, there most likely is a friction adjustment screw inside the pedestal. Remove the compass and you should be able to access it.

or "J" Clamp

http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=Dion73064768600&fno=17 The fricton screw works for a little while. We have a Y/S Merriman pedestal and it was not enough tension to keep the throttle position for more than a few days. We had one of the old cable crushers which was OKAY but not the best solution. We came across this device which was recommended by our Yanmar repair person. The best part of this device is the fact that you can micro adjust it in a matter of moments.

Steve, I've never had to adjust my Merriman

set screw in 19 years. (except for the first time) I think the trick is to keep the lube off of the shaft.

Like Fred mentions, the key is NOT letting any lube into the throttle cable, which I did whilst lubing the chain under the compass in my Merriman system on my H285. The result is that the throttle lever has lost some friction and won't stay where you want for long without an assist from a bungy cord. I "fixed" this self-created problem with a simple wire clamp from Home Depot which costs about .50 cents. I know,it ain't "marine grade" and will probably rust in 5 yrs....

I have never lubed the cable either. I think that you will find that you have more corrosion in your cable and that is causing enough friction. The J Clamp is a cheap/easy/welcome fix.
