Throttle Cable

I just launched on Tuesday and plan on heading to my home port as soon as the weather clears. I noticed that I am only reading 2500 RPM's on the Tach with the throttle open full at the pedastal. I checked the tach readings with a hand-held tach and I am only off by a small amount. When I reached in to where the throttle cable attaches to the engine I was able to advance it to around 2900 RPM's (verified with the hand-held). I know the Universal M25XP is rated to 3200 RPM's, and I know my regular tach has been slightly off ever since I replaced the stock Motorola Alternator to a 70 amp Leece Neville a few years back. Nothing looks out of sorts where the engine controls are located. Meaning everything is coated with that Universal Bronze paint, nothing looks like it has been touched. Can the Cable have stretched causing the reduction in RPM's via the throttle cable? The Yard is going to take a look tomorrow, but it is making me crazy. The engine starts easily, therefore I doubt I have any compression problems and it also runs at 160 degrees. The weird part is I had the alternator replaced two seasons ago and that is when I realized the readings were off. I assumed all was OK, just reading wrong RPM's at my control panel. Over the winter I picked up an inexpensive hand-held RPM gauge and that is when I found out how much of a lose I have been experiencing. I know you lose some power going from a 55 amp to a 70, but not 700 RPM's. Any idea what it could be? I also want to avoid opening up my Pedastal. I have removed my Navpod Housing and Compass at least 5 times this Spring while working on my steering. I do not want to look down there one more time. I have no problem with the throttle moving while underway so I do not need to adjust the friction control. I assume you cannot adjust the throttle from there anyway.

Rest easy

You already know where the cable meets the engine. Look at the end of the cable as it attaches to lever that connects to the throttle (which you advanced by hand). At the end of the cable is a small thread and a nut. You should be able to adjust it from there.

Re: Rest easy

I had already put in a job ticket and they beat me to the boat yesterday morning. The Yard Mechanic moved the throttle arm to a different hole which changed the angle. My throttle now is a bit stiffer, but it does not hit the Pedastal Guard and I get my full RPM's. Was this the correct fix, or should I try something else. He did mention that he did not want to open up the Pedsatal. I cannot blame him as removing the compass and Navpod Housing is a pain. I did it 5 times this Spring.
