Throttle Cable Woes on 35.5

The throttle on my 1992 35.5 Legend is extremely difficult/stiff to operate inspite of lots of lubrication on the cable and linkage. In fact the linkage and cable seemed fine after I disconnected it to check it out. Another owner told me that "thats the way it is on the 35.5"; an inherent annoyance! Is there nothng that can be done on the 3GM30 to free up the trottle mechanism so it operates smoothly? Fred S/V M Squared

how does it shift without the cable?

Fred: Have you actually tried to just shift the transmission without the cable attached to it? If it shifts okay without the cable attached and the cable moves freely when not attached to the transmission, you need to look at the routing of the cable. These cables are generally designed to have a radius that is something like 4" or 8" depending on the make and the brand. Check this out and let us know.

Creep clamp

The throttle cable on our H31 has a little clamp that you can tighten to keep the throttle from creeping. If this clamp is too tight, it makes movement of the throttle lever dificult. Hope this helps, Bob

Well shut my mouth!

Fred: Sorry about that! I was in the ozone. I was thinking shifting while you were throttling. Bob is right. I doubt that you have one of these "J-clamps", but you may have a crusher on yours. If you look at the pictures in the photo forum that I posted, I think I have pictures of my old crusher in there. They are just two pieces of metal with a couple of bolts that you use to "Crush" the cable housing down on the cable. If you have one, it is probably down near the engine. Remove it and see if that doesn't help. If it takes care of the problem, you now probably have a new problem "throttle creep". You can just get a "J-clamp" and try that. I would recommend that you do not put it where the crusher was. Move it ahead or behind the old location. I do not think that there is any inherent problem with these throttles. This engine is basically identical to the 2GM20 but another cylinder. PS: Thanks Bob (I'm going back to sleep)

Hunter 35 Cables

Gentlemen, I take issue with the concept that stiff throttle and shifting cables are normal in a Hunter 35 or 35.5. I had a serious case of stiff cables and was able (forced) to swap them out for a set of easy glide cables from Edson. They are great and give finger tip control for my Hunter Legend 35 with the Edson pedestal and a Yanmar 3GM. Hunter installed a Morse red dog cable and it is a bear to use. I have a set if anyone is interested. With the Edson easy glide one can reduce the radius and save money. I ordered a 17 foot set because that is what was in there. I could easly get away with a 12 foot set. In any case stiff throttle/gear shift is not normal in a Hunte 35 or 35.5. It can be fixed and make life esy Bob Dean Pensacola, FL
