Throttle Cable Slowly slips

Have an 87 and the throttle cable on the pedestal slowly returns to about 2000 RPM's when we are motoring at 3000 RPM's. I know there must be something that tightens the cable so that the position of the throttle holds...I have to keep my hand on the handle when we are motoring now...just started this Spring..so there must be a nut or something that needs tightening (under the compass maybe). Appreciate any responses. ...Larry...

Adjustment screw

Larry: There is an adjustment screw under the compass as you suspected. You can also purchase a Morse cable clamp to add a little tension on the cable too.

Wow...that was quick!

Thanks Steve....this will be my afternoon fixer-upper after I cut the grass when I get home today. Also will make for a more enjoyable weekend on the bay. Thanks again. ...Larry...

Just a note.

If you have a long thin blade screw driver, this is what it will take to tighen the set screw. I wish I had the driver here that I use so I could measure for you but I would assume that it should be about a 6-8" blade. Good luck and happy motoring<grin>

Steve, what do we look for?

I have the same problem with my '84 31. I'm gonna go looking tonight for this screw. Any further advise on what/where to look. I've had the compass off before but do not recall seeing any set screws.

same on H-34

I had the same problem on my H-34. A local marine yard put a nylon washer in the connection at the pedastal and it has been okay for a year.

What do we look for?

Don/Larry: That is a good question that I do not have a good answer for. Buuuttt, As I remember the throttle handle is 'L' shaped. It has a brass rod in goes into the pedestal. This rod has a bracket that clamps onto it and the bracket has the adjustment screw in it. It has been so long since I did mine that I cannot remember if you need a flash light to see or not but probably not a bad idea if you an ol' blind bastard like me. I would recommend that you do not over tighten it. Always easier to snug it up a little more later that strip the thing. Just remember you do need a LONG blade on the screw driver and the set screw is VERY small. The blade tip is about the size of one of those electronic type screw drivers with a VERY LONG blade. I will also try to see if I can get the part# for the morse clamp. Remind me if I do not get back to you. Besides being blind I'm a forgetful SOB.

Tension set screw is in the shaft housing

and I think it is accessed from below the housing. The screw tightens against the plastic bearing sleeve and pushes against the shaft. I put two other screws in mine since the original threads were stripped. Just drill and tap them and flatten the ends of the set screws. Careful you do not overtighten - it will strip the threads easily. I really hate the idea of a cable clamp. The cables wear and break too easily as it is and it is too easy for some idiot to overtighten it. I have had the unpleasant experience of replacing a cable already under some trying circumstances.

Alternative to the tension screw

I found that now matter how tight I tightened the tensions screw after putting in a brand new cable it still backed off. Intead of putting more and more tension on the nylon sleeve, I installed a spring in the engine compartment to the throttle mechanism and a anchor point. Works great but still needs a bit stronger spring when throttle is up to 3200 rpm or so. Good luck doug

Don't tighten too much

I have a 87H28.5. If pedestal on the 31 is same as mine (Merriman) be careful when tightening the tension screw, or you may shear the block that it pushes against. I have same problem with throttle slipping, but on my boat a previous owner overtightened and cracked the mounting block (it's only plastic). I fabricated a substitute by mounting a small rubberized loom clamp so that the clamp cradles the throttle shaft, and gives it some friction. My company, Great Valley Industries, sells these clamps. Call customer service at 1-800-722-8100 and ask them to fax you a copy of page 50 of our catalog and you can see what I'm talking about.

Throttle set screw

Hunter 31's of that vintage have Merriman Pedestals. Under the Compass and directly over the throttle shaft is a threaded hole. Go to Home Depot and in the hardware dept. in the small parts bins ,look for a nylon screw 1/4 X 20 appx 2"' long. Screw that into your pedestal and sail away. If you can't find the nylon screw, use any 1/4 X 20 stainless machine screw and cut up small pieces of nylon cable tie .Drop the small pieces of nylon down the threaded hole and then screw in the steel bolt. If all else fails, use a bungee cord wrapped around the throttle lever.
