the throttle cable on my 1983 H34 snapped at the point where the cable slides inside a collar with a crimped fitting. This occurred on the pedestal end of the cable, which is much harder to reach. My question is do I have to replace the entire cable including the plastic sheath that the cable slides through, or can I just replace the actual cable, or find a way to re-crimp the cable inside a new fitting. I think the process of replacing the entire cable including the plastic sheath will be a royal pain, especially the end that goes up the pedestal and somehow attaches to something I can not see down there. Any experiences would be appreciated. Bob Cunnningham

Bob, replace the entire cable with a Teleflex...

from WM or other marine supply houses. Use the same length or call Hunter Marine Customer Service and they will give you the correct length. You might want to consider replacing the shifter cable while you're at it. Check the archives for articles on replacement instructions or Edson's website. Terry

Drop the Pedestal

Bob, Same thing happened to me a few years ago. The easiest part of the job was laying the pedestal over. This gives you easy access to the connection point up inside the pedestal. It's no fun, my only mistake was not replacing both cables. Phil

drop the pedestal

Phil in order to drop the pedestal, do I have to disconnect anything? Bob C.

Yes

Bob, Yes, you'll have to take the strain off of the steering cables, but you don't have to remove them. I did this by removing one of the sheaves at the base of the pedestal. You could also take the strain off at the quadrant by backing off the wire connection screws. Then you take out the 4 screws and just gently lay it over. This worked out great for me. I was quite hesitant to remove the pedestal, but after I did, it turned out to be one of the easiest parts of the jobs. It took me about 3 days to do the whole job. Phil

"labor day"

Phil thanks for your assistance. I did it today, Labor Day. My pedestal is a Merriman/Yacht Specialties, not Edson. I did loosen up the steering cables as you described and was prepared to take the pedestal off its bolts when I noticed three self tapping screws about half way down the pedestal. Took them out, lifted the top half of the pedestal off and voila I was able to get at the clamp that was holding the throttle cable. It took all day to complete but it is back to where it was before. I did not replace the shift cable as it looks in good shape, and it is much easier than the throttle cable to get to, so when it goes, it should take only half a day. thanks Bob C.

Great

Bob, Wow, that's great! What a good find. Mine is an Edson and does not come apart. Glad your all set and back to sailing! Phil
