Throttle Cable for 37c

The throttle cable on my 1981 H37-C has become stiff, and I'm afraid I might break it at the worst possible moment. Short of pulling it out (and rendering the boat unmaneuverable for a time), to find out, I thought maybe some of you might know the number for this and the tranny cable too, so one trip to the shop will suffice.

Dave, I would call Edson assuming that you have an Edson pedestal like I have: 508-995-9711 . I see lots of throttle and tranny cables on their parts lists but have no idea what mine are.

If you don't want to replace them with new cables, it is possible to lubricate the old ones and in some cases, if they are not too far gone, can be brought back to workable condition.

To lube them, you will have to remove them from the boat. Place a piece of tape on one end (which will serve as a stop) and remove the inside core from the other end up to the point you see the tape. The tape is there to avoid removing the inner core entirely thereby obviating the problem with reinserting it.

Once removed, clean to remove all the grime and corrosion, lube and reinsert.

Mine is made by Merriman Yacht Specialties Ed, but the specs might be similar if not identical. I'll call Edson & see what they say. My understanding is that Merriman is out of business.

I don't think you need to purchase one from Edson. There are a couple of other companies out there that make these cables. I would check with Morse & Teleflex for suitable replacements. Hunter may even have some info on the units too.

Engine control cables

The throttle and transmission cables Edson sells are in even number lengths, 6, 8 and 10 foot. My H37C has 9 foot cables. Fisheries Suppy has what I need plus they are cheaper. When you take the pedistal apart be sure to use plenty of PB Blaster on the screws. They want to live where they are. I had to use a nut driver and then a 90 degree variable speed drill with large 5/16 shank slotted screw driver bits. I broke 6 getting 4 screws out.

Today I purchased replacement cables for my H37C from Fisheries Supply. They were $53 each discounted to $29 with my "New Boat Owners Discount". Edson wanted $93 plus shipping.

Take your old ones in and they will ID the numbers on them and get you the right ones.

Thanks for the reply

My 37C is a 1981 with a Yanmar 3QM-30 engine. Is this close to yours? If so, any chance you could share with me the stock numbers you got? I'm hoping to use my old cables as "messengers" to pull the new ones into place. But only if I'm sure they are the right ones.

And as for you, Ed.......I'll have you know I have to move the old bucket around here once in a while....you know, take on water, take off s--t, get out of the way of some "yachtie" who wants his mooring for the weekend, the usual stuff.

Must admit though, get out to sail very infrequently. The recent turn of events has made it necessary to hustle on shore a bit more in order to live in this paradise. Hope all is well with you and your new bride. CONGRATULATIONS!!! You have my every wish for a long and happy marriage.

Thanks Dave. Actually you probably "move" more than I do given my green crew. The next four or five days are predicted to be 15 to 20 knots of a Nor'easter. Not sure who would go out with me. This economy is a bummer to be sure but you are in the right place to let it go by. Will you ever leave there? What about those Pacific islands? Maybe after you get your cables changed. :)
