Throttle Cable busted!

Was looking for some short cuts in research from the wealth of info out here! The other day, I cranked up my 95 336. The 3GM30F fired fine and idled but when I added throttle... nothing. I isolated and discovered the throttle cable is broken. I thanked her for breaking in the slip rather than at sea, buttoned her up, little pat on her rubrail, and caught a plane home. Im in phoenix, boats in San Diego.... Cable is red and goes to Edson shifter that I believe is original. Anyone know who makes these cables? How long is it? Is there a suitable aftermarket replacement? ThanksRicks/v Whiskey Chaser

I had the same thing happen to me two years ago. I have a H34 with a 3GMF and a Merriman pedistal but I have to assume the Edson works in a similar fashion. Took off the compass from the top, loosened the steering chain that is connected to wheel from below by loosening the steering sextant bolt (marked its pre-loosened position with tape so I knew how much to tighten when done), found a screw mid way down the pedistal in order to separate the top from bottom, found and loosened a clamp mid way on the pedistal that was holding the cable in place, and then pulled the cable out. Measured the cable length, took it to West Marine and found an exact replacement for about $70. If the replacement is a little longer, that should not be a problem. Put it together in reverse order. Due to lack of prior experience it took most of the day, maybe you can do better. good luck.

Thanks BobOne question... maybe I didnt understand. You said found screw separating the top from the bottom. You mean top and bottom of pedestal? Or top and bottom of cable? I assume I just have to match up the fittings when connecting to motor and throttle quadrant.ThanksRick

the screw was to separate the top and bottom of the pedestal. You may or may not have one. After separating, I found the clamp which was holding the cable in place. Loosened the clamp and I was able to pull the cable out of the pedestal and disconnect the other end from the engine. The fittings on my old cable matched exactly to the fittings on the new one, both engine and throttle lever. I think they are pretty standard.Bob C.

Check Writing ON the Cable

There should be some numbers/letters printed ON the cable. That will tell you the type and length of the cable. You may have to call a boat buddy to look at it for you, if all else fails.
