I have a 1986 Johnson 15hp long shaft outboard on my Mac 25. It works great. But the throttle arm when in the horizontal position hits the transom of the boat and prevents steering so I have to have the arm angled at about a 60 degree angle to be able to swing left and right. Problem is this throttle arm has a gear that connects to the motor and main throttle and at this angle the gear skips and will not hold RPM's. Thought about trying a motor mount that would hold the motor out futher from the transom but am afraid of the leverage and weight on the hull? I have already beefed this area up to handle the 15hp. Is there a remote throttle I could use for this motor?

I've found that >90% of my boat's steering is done with the rudder, not the motor. I'm sure there are times when a combination of the two will get you through/around a tricky pass, but those times are rare for me. I just lock the motor straight and use the rudder.

I had the same 15 hp Johnson on the C27 hooked up with remote throttle and electric stary. The remote throttle and shift are really handy. The only issue would be connecting and disconnecting to remove the motor when towing the boat, could be a pita.
What kind of mounting bracket do you have. This old Garelick seems to do the trick. Notice that if you do go with a remote throttle there is no trottel handle. The electric start is a sweeeet feature.
Another option is a throttle arm extension with un
iversal joint connections.
I thought of this one after posting, and that is a steering arm from your rudder bracket to your motor, been done many times and is excellent for tight meneuvering.

I have the Easy Steer system hooked up to the rudder / moter and the same type motoer mount CAGUY has. I appreciate his photo of the set up and will be contacting my dealer afet the holiday to get the remote throttle and shifter set up. Thank you all very much for your input and Happy New Year.

My motor is just locked dead ahead and I steer with the rudder.

When docking I just idle it down so that I can shift between fwd and rev without clunking.

When coming into the dock I just power up, neutral cost, reverse for a little braking and fwd or neutral while using the rudder for control.

The shift lever cost about $1.00 to make.

Caguy, thanks for the photo, I just spoke to my machanic and he has a dual control that will fit along with the control hookups. All I need to add is the cables, I am trying to decide where to mount the control's? I can not tell from your photo how your controls are mounted any sugestions.
