Does anyone know where I can get stainless steel replacements for my plastic throttle and shifter levers on my '87 Cat 30?? The old ones looks crappy, but I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find good replacements. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks... Jim 'Dolphin' San Diego

Shift handles

You can get them from Edson but they are pretty expensive

Edson

Hi Jim - I replaced my original plastic shift/throttle levers with the chrome ones from Edson. As Ron mentioned, they are pretty expensive, but I think worth it. Much more durable and they look a lot better. I think I bought mine direct from Edson at a boat show, but there are distributed by several chandleries and riggers around the country. Click on the link below for Edson's dealer locator. Best, Trevor

thanks

Thanks, Ron... According to Edson, they're $48 for each handle. That puts them on my 'Xmas Wish List' since they're merely cosmetic. Now, the autopilot, on the other hand....heheheheh Jim 'Dolphin' San Diego

Plastic handles broke!

I was maneuvering in a narrow channel when the plaastic shift lever snapped at the base due to a crack that had developed quickly. The boat is a 1985 that I had recently purchsed. The inability to shift caused me to run aground. The $96 spent on the Edson stannless replacements was worth it for peace of mind that this won't happen again.

Check your cables

whether you replace the handles or not. You shouldn't have to force the levers at all. If you do the problem is in the cables. Lubricate or replace.

Spend the $$

You can find them at boatUS and West Marine for about $50 per handle. That was one of the first things I did when I purchased my 1988 c-30 in 1999. It's really a safety issue not cosmetic. You need to be able to shift quickly at any time. The soft plastic will bend or break when you most need it. Spending $100 will save thousands. Why spend all the time and money on your boat just to lose or damage it just to save $100? That's the price and fun of boat ownership!
