Been a very busy week for the Coast Guard... PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Three sailors were hoisted from a sailing vessel 400 miles off Virginia while a search continues for the remaining two crewmembers. Thomas Tighe, from Patterson, N.Y., and Lochlin Reidy, from Woodbridge, Conn., are missing from their 45-foot sailing vessel, Almeisan, after encountering 28 to 33-knot winds and taking on water from 16 to 20-foot seas. Three additional sailors, Ronald Burd, from Dover, N.H., Christopher Ferrer, from Sterling, Mass., and Kathleen Gilchrist, from Bloomfield, N.J., have been hoisted from the Almeisan and transferred to Nantucket in a Coast Guard helicopter.

SAILBOAT CAPTAIN DIES WHILE TRYING TO SAVE CREW

SAILBOAT CAPTAIN DIES WHILE TRYING TO SAVE CREW PORTSMOUTH, Va.- Survivors of the sailing vessel Almeisan distress have provided additional details concerning the loss of the vessel's captain, Thomas Tighe. After experiencing extreme weather and pounding surf, Tighe activated an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon and began preparing a life raft to evacuate his crew. While he and crewmate Lochlin Reidy were deploying the raft, both were washed overboard by a large wave. Early news releases indicated that he had abandoned ship when in fact he was preparing the raft for his crew. His family reports that Tighe was a seasoned sailor who had made this trip to Bermuda many times.

Still do not get it

What am I missing? 20 foot seas? 33 knot winds? Reef the sails and pick a course! Like the earlier post, the facts just do not explain the subsequent events. I do know that seasickness will make you do stupid things but was there some other (valid) reason for abandoning ship?

Step Up to Life Raft

I still don't understand why they were deploying the life raft when the boat was still seaworthy. I was always taught you step up to the life raft. How did they get washed over? Were they wearing tethers?
