My 1984 Hunter 27 has three halyards and is equipped with a CDI roller furler. The furler has its own internal halyard (with a messenger). The mast has two internal halyards. (one for the main sail). A spinnaker halyard runs to the top of the mast from the port rail. I have no idea what to do with that second halyard that goes through the mast. Does anyone know?

Extra Halyard

I Had an extra halyard added so I have 1 for the spinnaker but goes to an extra block on top of the mast 2 jib halyards I have a profurl and I can break open the drum so I can use the jib or my genoa, 1 for the main and the extra one I use it as my topping lift, I have the regular topping lift, but I had to go out to use it in the front part of the boom, now I just go to the clutch and everything is handy, also I installed a midboom traveller that I can operate from my seat. mine is a 27 1983 basically the same as yours Good Luck Ed S/V Mastconfusion

Furler....

If your furler has more than one track on the trailing edge, it is so you can make changes prior to dropping the sail currently flying. Typically a racing manouver. You can use the extra halyard to attach to the head of the larger/smaller headsail and hoist immediately prior to dropping sail alread up. If you have only one slot in your furler, the sky is the limit. Doug

Re: Three halyards

Thanks, Doug and Ed, I do appreciate the info. I did not mean to post an anonimous message, I just forgot to fill out my name. Thanks again, Hans.

Jib Halyard

The "extra" internal halyard is for the hank on jib. CDI is one of the few roller furling systems that uses its own messenger and halyard to hoist the jib on the furling system. Most other systems rely on the standard jib halyard to hoist the jib up the furling system. If your CDI is working good (mine on a 22ft Starwing was great), be thankful your rig now has a second halyard to fly a spinaker or a drifter.
