Depends on the size of the needle. Larger needles seem to prefer larger thread. (See first choice above.)

It's either 1/4 or 5/16
You also want to check as to whether the thread is right or left handed. Sorry can't help you with the exact size but be careful as they can change from boat to boat in the same run. Maybe buy a 1/4"and a 5/16" nut and try to be sure.

I have an 83 hunter. I think it is 1/4" but I can check tomorrow.

Also, on a boat that age you don't know for certain that the lifelines are original, even if they look aged. I like Ralph's idea.
