I did it on my 320

Works great, love it, would do it again. Why did the dealer suggest not to add it? Regards. Bruce. Neon Moon

dealer said they cause boats to sink

I asked about the PSS and cost of adding and the dealer told me he heard of a few boats where the seal failed and the boats sank. I kinda heard the same thing once a few years back but i think these were isolated instances. Im very into keepign the bilge dry so Im goin for it.

I doubt that he knows the difference!

Ed: I am not saying that he really knows but I doubt that he knows the difference between PSS and the other units on the market. I have NEVER heard this from ANYONE on this site.

PSS works fine

I installed a PSS seal and I'm happy with it but I'm the only one that goes into the shaft hatch. But if anyone really wanted to sink your boat on purpose, he can do it easily with a utility knife!!! He could do it with the standard staffing box too but he(or she) will have a much harder time cutting through the hose. I better keep this a secret from my wife. Happy sailing.

Dripless

I would not hesitate to put a dripless shaft seal on a new boat. I had one for three years with no problems. When they came out with the dripless packing for the traditional style stuffing box I went back my old stuffing box.

Dripless

I may be old fashion but on my 2001 450 I had a standard box with teflon packing installed rather than the dripless. If a mechanical seal fails it is a total failure and could sink your boat if you do not respond quickly. Packing onley drips and can be adjusted. After one year packing is only moist no significant drip. Good for 5 years. Keep it simple Len Fagan "Tale Winds"

True Len but....

Len: Your point is very well taken. I also have tef-packing. There is another view on this matter. We had one of those slooooow leaks on our Hunter 31. We had not been at the boats for several weeks (over a month). One of our harbor friends when over to our boat to borrow something. When they stepped down into the cabin, there was about 2-3 inches of water in the cabin. The bilge pump had failed. The cabin sole became discolored where the water was standing. My opinion was that if we would have had a PSS dripless unit this would have never happened. We still have the tef-packing and are still pondering the upgrade.
