Thoughts on a new idea

I have an Avon inflatable that has black rubber oarlocks(idiot who designed this obviously thought most topsides are black). We worked very hard getting the topsides looking like new this spring only to have them all marked now from those oarlocks. My idea is this: Get some of the white rubberised tool coating that most hardware stores sell and coat the oarlocks. After thinking about it more I thought hey why not do the same with old stained fenders? In fact you can buy this stuff in many different colors and I bet it has a hundred uses in and around our boats. I have already used this stuff to coat some pegboard hangers to help prevent rust and staining. Here are some other ideas: Line whipping? Make those winch handles look like new again? Where lifelines pass through the stanchions? ??? What do the rest of you think? Will it stick? Will it last? I figure if it lasts 1 season I can always recoat them every year. Tim R.

Try it!

Try it and let us know how it works. About the worst that can happen is that it will peel off when you start rowing. Dick

At least one good thing about the idea:

At the very least the coating should protect those Avon oarlocks from becoming further broken-down by the sun, which is apparenty what they are doing if they are chalking enough to mark up the fibreglass like that. Come to think of it, wouldn't Armor-All or something do the same thing? Let us know how it works, Tim! JC

Beware of ArmorAll

It breaks down the rubber and actually causes it to dry out more. Do not use it on your car. I also dabble in auto restoration and it is widely known as a bad product amoung car enthusiasts. There are other products that would work well but would not solve the marking issue. I plan on buying the PlastiDip tonight and trying it out. Tim

I've used the PlastiDip

to coat the ends of battens - you don't have to put it on very thick, just one dip, and because it stays a little pliable it seems not to abraid the pockets.
