Those Cherubinis are STRONG

My 1980 33 actually "survived" Katrina at South Shore Harbor in New Orleans. Out of the 400 or so boats in the marina, absolutely none remained tied to their docks. Many ended up in the parking lot adjacent to the marina, deposited there by the 17+ foot storm surge...hard to tie a boat to a dock and have it stay there under those conditions, didn't seem to matter how well or how poorly the mooring job was, they all either sunk or broke loose. The point of this post is, though, that many of the Cherubini Hunters, the 30's 33's and 37's seemed to survive in one piece, and all I have seen still have their rigging and masts!!! look at the link above and you will see what I mean.. Reality traveled about 200 yards from the dock to the parking lot, and still has the mast and doesn't appear to have any holes in the hull...Most boats, Hunter or otherwise, seemed to lose the masts and rigging, but it is unusual how many of the Cherubini models from the late 70's to early 80's survived with masts and keels intact. Of course, now the boats are being "protected" by a marine salvage company hired by the Orleans Levee board that won't let civilians into the marina to check on their boats, so Reality may have survived Katrina to be "sunk" by the legal storm, but just the fact that she survived in one piece is a testament to the strength of those old Hunters...I've attached a link to some pictures...don't look if you love boats, there are a lot of dreams in a pile in these pictures. Anybody want to sublease a slip for 6 months??

good news!

Very glad to hear that Reality seems to have come through better than you at first thought for I remember a post where you assumed the worse. I surely would be interested in any further photos of your H33 as you get access, particularly how the rudder, hull, and cleats fared. Hope to meet you sometime under sail.

Those pictures are quite amazing. It's nice to hear about the Cherubinis especially when others in the industry have deemed Hunters as "junk" sailboats. I noticed that they are spray painting the boats to mark them for some reason. As an owner I would be quite disturbed by this. I understand the reason for marking them, but all of those boats will now need to be repainted. I would think there is a better solution.

Unbelievable - Jim question

What amazes me is the boat shed and docks seem to be intact even with all those boats rolling around. Jim S/V Java

Hey Jim, so sorry.

Jim, I am truely sorry your boat has gone through this. I just hope you are able to have her in the water again soon, but from the looks of the images... that could take quite a while. She sure is a pretty 33! By the way, I really like the presentation of your images.. what program did you use to create the book with turning pages. I'm a photogrpaher and something like that would be useful in my business. Good luck with the legal hassel, hope all goes well. David

My 36 did well. The pine tree wrapped it's arms around her mast and held her from falling as the surge receded. She is 65 ft from water and will be lifted tommorow on her way to Bay Marine for minor deck mounted damage. No obvious hull damage. The tree has bark missing up 6 to 10 feet. :) :) my house down there had 3 ft water and maybe $60k of uninsured damage. And no, the first mate says we cannot live aboard!!!
