THOSE ANNOYING SQEAKS.

I FINALLY GOT MY FIRST "BIG" BOAT, A 1991 CAT 28 WHICH I'VE BEEN ENJOYING SAILING ON THE HUDSON. SHE WAS LISTING A FEW DEGREES TO PORT AND SOME FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS THOUGHT THE MAST WAS NOT CENTERED. I CAREFULLY ADJUSTED THE SHROUDS AND BACK STAY WHICH HAS HELPED THAT PROBLEM BUT I HAVE A SQEAK WHEN IM ON THE MOORING AND WHEN THE BOAT ROCKS BACK AND FORTH. I TRIED LUBRICATING THE GOOSE NECK AND WHERE THE HALIYARDS EXIT THE MAST AS WELL AS REDUCING THE TENSION ON THE HALIYARDS WHICH HELPED SOMEWHAT BUT WHAT AM I MISSING?????I SURE WOULD LIKE TO SLEEP ON THE BOAT SOMETIME.KEN

Maybe the dock is moving and making noise. f ollow your hears. does the wheel or tiller move? is the stove moving?

I had the same SQEAK and it also was coming from the dock.

Another possible source

Do you have a sodil boom vang? I have known them to be the source of squeaks.

Mooring Line?

Since you indicate you're on a mooring, check out the pennant through the chock or over the topside. Sometimes the stretch and friction can cause a noise. A chafe cover can help.

Yet Another Possible Source...

could be between the vang or mansheet block shackles and the boom stirrups. Especially if you are relying on keeping these under tension to minimise boom movement. A squirt of silicon lube now and then solved that for me - and so does using a light tackle to secure the boom.Very interested in your remedy for the list, Ken - my C28 (1993) still lists slightly to port, and I hadn't considered the mast as a problem. Did your re-tensioning take out the problem completely?
