But, I wonder if this would be a good time to make a lower offer on a boat that has been on the market for some time. Hmmm... not that I going to, but with the economy sinking, cash might be hard to come by making used boat sales slump to a point where the seller will take anything decent to get out from under the boat. This could very well be a buyers market extraordinaire. What say you?

boat trader on line or yacht world

are the 2 sites I used to find mine always offer much less than they are asking it gives them a chance to say either yes or no and also gives room to dicker.

Don't dallly and miss the boat

It's always a good idea to shop aggressively, but don't dally too long. Once you find a boat you want, go after it. Remember, the market may be soft now but then everyone else is thinking the same thing. Make your deal and close it. In a few months, this down talk can evaporate as fast as it gathered.

All economic cycles will cycle! Everything goes up until it goes down! Everything goes down until it goes up! That is the way of the world according to Garp! Dennis W. S/V FullSailed ps: and still sailing

I've never seen...

repo'ed boats on YachtWorld. Am I not looking in the right place? At least I don't ever recall a "pull-down" or "selection" for repo'ed. Nor have I seen one so stated in the boat's description. I have seen cars and homes and other things, but not boats. r.w.landau, I appreciate your candor about the "economy", but if this is something that I can take advantage, or us sailors as a whole, then we should. However, I agree that this was not the venue to express those opinions. Phil, could you please sanitize this thread? Thanks

Seeing lower prices

Saw an 80 something Ericson 27 on craigslist with a lot going for it; not a fixer upper. Good pics of a clean boat with a list of $$$ improvements in the last few years. Asking price $3900 due to foreclosure. Gone in a day.

Check craigslist

Craigslist offers free ads for many items including boats. You can locate sail and power boats in your area, or if you are willing to travel listings span the country. I just listed my Hunter and maybe I will be able to find a willing buyer for this nice trailerable sailboat from the clear waters of Wisconsin. Good luck with your search of the boating dream. John

John...

Craig's List and Yacht World are my two main sources of listings. I use Craig's List to search for a dinghy. But I have seen some good deals on Craig's List. Like I said, I am not looking right now. But I think with the economy the way it is this could be a very good time for someone to get into the boat of their dreams.

Not a good time to sell a boat ...

There's always a catch! If I wanted to take advantage of this great buyer's market, I'd have to find a buyer for my boat! I would also want to be a little bit more sure of my income (I'm in the homebuilding industry). Oh well, years from now I may be thinking about the great deals that we passed up back in 2008. :{

Good to Buy, Bad to sell

There are 2 reasons why it is good to buy and bad to sell. 1) Given the state of the economy and the forecast, it dont look all that good. We are headed to a recession, whether mild or deep, the point is it will be a 'recession'. People will unload unnecessary expenses, and boating will probably top the list. 2) Marina space is slowly becoming a premium on the Gulf of Mexico. More and more marinas are selling out to condo developers. AS space becomes more difficult to find, the prices will rise eventually to the point of being unaffordable to the lower and middle middle income. How soon this will happen is anyones guess. Should you buy now or wait for prices to drop even lower?. If I knew that, I would make a killing on the stock market. If I were to see what I wanted at a good price, I would buy it now. If you keep waiting, you would never even own a color TV. If you find what you want in your area, usually you can get the slip with the boat. That solves a serious problem in some areas. Personally, I think sailing will slowly decline in popularity for the above reasons and also the younger generation seems to be more into high tech fast moving sports. I say....go for it. Tony B

Never hurts to make an offer on everything you buy....

this goes from boats, to car, to home, to electronics and retail sales. My wife does it on jewelry. If you do it politely: ie "Would you be offended if I offered you $_____ for_________?"

Not necessarily so

At a minimum, it depends on the boat. I've made offers on several boats in the last 8 months or so and find little to no flexibility in price other than the normal bargaining down from the originally high listed price. One particular broker/marina owner was asking roughly 10-15k over the average price for the year and model and said the owner wouldn't come down more than 2k. He refused to even take a lower offer to the owner. The only person I found that really wanted to deal down low was someone that had already purchased his next boat. He was hurtin'. Unfortunately, the boat he is selling also has extensive core damage and I didn't want to take that on just yet.
