Thinking of Repowering

Well, after my 250-mile cruise last week around Admiralty Island here in SE Alaska, I am of the opinion that my current engine is inadequate for the conditions here (strong currents and heavy seas, with iffy & gusty wind conditions mean you motor a lot). I currently have a Yanmar 1GM10 (9hp), and bucking into 6' chop and 25-30 knot winds, it struggled to maintain 1.5 knots, meaning a crazy long day and very uncomfortable beat to windward.

I am strongly considering repowering to a new Yanmar 2YM15 (14hp) or even a 3YM20 (22hp - likely way too big for the boat). The main reason for the yanmar is my father is the local yanmar rep, and he'll give it to me at cost.

What I'm really looking for is a engine that will power the boat at 3-4 knots through 6 foot chop, and easily push the boat to hull speed in calmer weather, so I can run lower RPM's for good fuel economy.

Does anyone have any experience with the 14 hp in a Vega? Will it give me the power to push through the seas I am looking for?

Sorry, let me get this strait? you want 3 to 4 knts on a 6 ft chop? in a vega against a 25 to 30 knt wind? 14 horse power engine..........I would suggest, get a newer sail kit, frankly I had to do it (engine failure) and it was easier than with the engine (8hp).

I dont think you can fit a 14 hp on a Vega.

Pretty sure the bigger yanmars have been installed into Vegas in the past.
If not, the BetaMarine BZ482 fits neatly and is 13.5Hp

Hi All

14HP is the standard Beta (Real life 13.5HP), we have also fitted teh Beta 20HP with no problem. Both fit quite easily.

Mind you 4 kts into 30kt wind is asking somethng! A few years back I saw a Vega with a 20hp Beta go the wrong way through Clachan Sound that had 5 kts tide running against it! At teh time I was skippering a Vega with a 1GM and must admit it was underpowered.....

Aint cheap though.

I have a Yanmar 2GM20 in my Vega with a 2 blade prop. Fits well in the engine bay and has the power I need on the West Coast of Scotland. Not as weather prone as Alaska but we have our moments of wind and tide!

We re-powered the Vegabond with a 2GM Yanmar (16HP?) and a 3 blade sail boat prop about 6 years ago. It provides plenty of power. The installation was expensive since the engine bed needed to be modified and It was done by a boat yard. The engine runs exceptionally well. The original Volvo was always sensitive to needing bleeding of the injectors.

I have a Yanmar 2GMF (early one) rated at 13 hp. It pushes me through most things here in the Vancouver Island region. Don't know about a 6' chop, but I have been through some heavy seas and strong currents.

My Vega is a Series 3 (V3283) The Yanmar 2GM20 has been fitted without having to modify the engine bearers.

Steve are the engine bearers on the Series 3 different from earlier Vegas?

Series II & III are the same bearers. Series I are the difficult ones! Ive made special bearer plates for teh Series I for the Beta Install, Series II & III are pretty easy.
