Does anyone know of any problem areas with this model that I should look for or any bad habits that the design might have. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am moving up from a Hunter 25.5Dan
I moved from a Catalina 25 to a Hunter 29.5 and found the improvement to be geometric. Our range is longer, our trips are 2 nights instead of none, our sleeping arrangements are fine, the engine goes farther, the list is endless. And by the way, you sail faster. For comparison purposes, check out the 29s and 29.5s for sale on this website from all over the country.
I think the 28.5 is a better boat, the 290 because of the rig take's away your choice of having a bigger head sail. We love our 28.5 and it will out sail the 29- all day long.Cliff
It's a 2000 model - last year was my first - 2 2-day trips, and 1 3-day trip, plus a lot of day sailing. What a great boat. Can't wait for spring and more overnight trips.
The hull shapes are the same. Wheel steering is the Edson style but a good unit. Generally, these boats were pretty well built for most parts. We had hull #1 here. Crazy Dave Condon
I have looked at the 306. That would be a huge price increase (extra 30-40k) and the only differences are port lights, steering pedestal, and nicer finish for the interior.Right now I am trying to decide between one 290 with the battened main and lazy jack/sailcover or another 290 that is similarly equiped but has the Seldon in-mast furling main. I am not sure how much performance is lost by having the in-mast convenience.Dan
Thanks for the suggestion of the 28.5. I am looking for a friendly interior and I just don't like the interior layout of the 28.5. We are going to be making numerous overnight and weekend long trips with an occasional week long trip so we like the livable interior of the 290. I am not expecting it to perform that much better than the 25.5 we are replacing. Dan
