looks like I might get 2 weeks off during xmas time, I'm thinking about circling Catalina island. if starting out of Alamitos Bay in Long Beach, is it better to go clockwise or counter-clockwise? anything to watch out for when circling? I've sailed to Avalon and TH separately before but haven't been to any other beach/mooring. thanks.

Go for it! I'd go counter clockwise. Plan for a couple of days in Cat harbor.... no crowds, totally protected.... give yourself plenty or room to clear the shoals on the west end.

Agree with both responses. Following their advice you'll be in the lee of the island for the upwind slog and off the wind on the unprotected backside.

Stay vigilant on the weather forecast at this time of year and carry sufficient ground tackle. If the Santa Ana winds come up and you're not in Cat Harbor on a mooring your only real protection is to anchor in an area known as Palisades on the backside.
