Not really

It would help keep water out of the cabin if you left the companionway hatch open. Assuming the "core" you're referring to is the balsa core in the deck laminate, I can't see any benefit. That problem is due to inadequately bedded deck hardware etc. and the water seeping in around the fastenings, old bedding and any cracking in the gelcoat.

Nope! More Trouble than its Worth.

Droop, IMHO Just something else to deal with when you want to go sailing. Won't help much in driving rain. Would be best to spend your money on sealing up the the penetrations as suggested by TT. Jon

Awnings

As previously noted, Awnings, Dodgers, & Biminis don’t do a whole lot to keep the rain off the boat ~ but they can’t be beat for keeping the sun off. In Southern climes this can be a very important comfort consideration. Elevated radiant barriers, such as these, keep the boat much cooler! They likely prolong the life of the (shaded) deck finish as well. Properly placed, they do offer some limited protection from rain, but (also as noted) they are NOT a substitute for proper sealing & bedding. $200 for a 10 x 12' seems kind of ‘pricy’ tho’. You got the right idea

A company in Philadelphia sells Too-Tuff tarps that are stronger than the typical blue. I use one 10x15 for the bow and another 20x15 for behind the mast. It's important to cut it deep enough to extend over the rubrail, which often leaks into the boat interior.
