Things you don't see in Minnesota, and the Goldilocks gambit

Well as long as the survey is not a disaster on Monday, Jodi and I fly to Orlando and then shuttle to Cocoa Beach to pick up the new First 36.7. We'll spend a day or two sorting her out, and then deliver her to Miami. PS - Name is Icarus. There were three options:

1) Motor down the IWC (I'm not a fan)
2) Offshore delivery sailing straight through (Jodi not a fan)

3) So the 'just right' option, sail/motorsail/motor near shore, stopping every 55mn miles or so. First POC is Fort Pierce. Next is Lake Worth, or a inlet or two farther if we are making good time.

Early departs, make constant 5-6 knots VMG, stay close to avoid as much current as we can. Our broker is a delivery captain as well and said that's what he'd do if we paid him to take her home. Any tips, shout them out!

Oh, the things you don't see in Minnesota?? While reconning all the likely places we'll go by, I spotted this on Apple Maps near the boat.

Fair winds. Congrats on the new boat.
So future home is Miami? A place for SnowBirds to rest?

I think that is an old pic when they moved the shuttle replica 'Explorer'

Would be cool if it was still there and you got to sail by her for sure!

thanks! Future BOAT home is Miami. For us maybe!

After owning two big boats up North, I finally figured out the crazy part.
Of prepping two boats in the spring and launching them.
Of having to decide what great boat you sail every weekend, and which one sits
Of having to pull them both out at the same time
Of spending all winter not sailing, or sailing on OTBs.

So now one waits for us in Miami. My company is HQ'ed there, and Jodi has family moving downtown. And flights are super cheap from MSP to MIA, and Coconut Grove is a short Uber ride away!

Well it's a great THEORY. Lets see how practice turns out. But we're lucky people. ;^)
You know what they say,
If it doesn't work in practice, it wasn't a great theory. But it will work out for you. Congratulations. Hope the survey works out well. That is a great area to sail. You and Jody will love it.

hey Will, Thanks we will!
Its funny, the Engineer in me likes the contrarian version of that saying:
'In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice however.......'

Keeps you on your toes for the stuff that WILL go wrong.
It will be fun. I manage the sailing, Jodi manages the shoreside play. Its a great arrangement.

Congrats on the new boat. Remember, Icarus flew too high, burned and crashed. Hope she does not share the same fate. :)
Know the story well. Daddy built the labyrinth. We like the 'Minnesotans flying (to someplace) too close to the sun' angle. And the graphics are badass. ;^)

And if Minnesota winters are like those in Central NY, the only time you get to see the sun is at 30,000ft heading south. :waycool:

CONGRATS!
Bring your "patience" pants.. the draw bridges are a problem.. get their opening schedules.. brush up on requesting openings.. Holding position is a skill worth knowing when waiting in a que to get through the draw..
Good Luck and yall have fun!
Have done it twice but from south to north.. We wanted to go offshore but on both deliveries, the owner's wives vetoed that..

Wasn't Minnesota the monster in the labyrinth?
:yikes:

I hadn't heard that one before. I like it.

Any of us who can play with boats have to feel blessed. And, change is good. So best wishes for this change.
We are trying to work out our retirement plan. Fl is on the short list. NY....well, not so much.

Congrats on the new boat and new sailing locale.
If things go well, you may even find the southbound countercurrent. It will be a matter of pitting your will to find it against your desire not to get too close to shore, which is really only a problem if there are strong easterlies. I don't remember exact distances, but I believe we often found it in 30 to 60' of water. Shouldn't be many obstructions in 30+ foot water.
However, if you have not done the ICW, it is one of the most amazing trips one can do anywhere in the world. All kinds of water creatures including gators, manatees and even dolphins from time to time. Then there are the mansions and towns you pass right through.
Perhaps, if it's a nice day, your better half will turn a blind eye to the bikini-clad beauties sunning themselves around the pools behind the mansions, while you sneak a peak, every now and then.

Oh a shuttle near Cocoa Beach. We were crossing the Okeechobee waterway and seen a Giraffe and a water buffalo in the back of a home, now that was strange even for Florida. I would take that third option as well; I have grown to sail comfortably, no need to loose sleep if it is not necessary. Hate motoring down the ICW as well.
