Hello Jim,
We visited Cobb Island in 2010 on our way to and from Alexandria. I still have my Shymansky's Marina hat.

I like the seat you made. I plan to make a set for next summer, but had planned to use wood. Maybe not....... Is the base with the cup holder opening a part of the original seat? How thick are the starboard pieces? (I had made seats several years ago using starboard that flexed too much.....maybe too much weight on the seat?)How did you attach the strips of starboard? (Is there a glue to use?) Did Lowes have the starboard?

Jim, its lovely. But wouldn't Starboard be alittle too slippery on the bottom?

Ken, it's not. Could well be that cetol or varnish or other wood coverings could be much slipperier. Our flat one is just fine.

I made a couple of seats for my Oday 322 last year using the same material. To buy them from a supplier it would be about $300.00. I was able to make my own almost identical for $160.00

I pulled all the teak off my 240 this year as well. It was just too mauch labor to keep up with. For my stern rail seats I just flipped them upside down and reversed them port to starboard and vice versa as the undersides looked nicer than the tops. I used a piece of 1*10 PVC garage trim to make a new companionway slide grab bar and the cup holder pieces for the coamings. I couldn't get that stuff to run through a router nicely.....I do have a mini sanding station that knocked the edges off nicely.

Jim, we are getting ready to leave. I hope to be on the road by the end of Nov. and splash the boat mid-Dec. I just ordered all new standing rigging as mast is down. That needs to be done before she goes back in.

I do all my projects over the summer, you do yours over the winter......

I will be going back to my old steel tanks for this season.....

Anyone ever tried ripping trex deck material to replace teak? Was looking at it at HD and Lowe's and it got me thinking. Way cheaper than starboard if it can be ripped and fininshed.

Haven't used trex but have used azek. Ripping can be challenging since the heat of the saw blade will melt the material so you have to go slow and stop regularly. Also the azek won't take a finish. There are a number of synthetic teak boards designed specifically for marine use. I'd try those first

Use a bandsaw, if possible, and cut just a bit proud of your final tablesaw rip.

I know there is wood colored wood substitute plastic planks out there but have not seen starboard in any other color but white. Seats would look really nice and be practical in a dark wood colored starboard. Nice work Jim, love the idea.

Guys, timbertech composite decking works well. They have a nice cedar color. Decking is 1" thick, however ask about the "skirt trim boards" they are 1/2" by 12" wide x 12' long. Ripping is not bad if you go slow, a small palm plane over the edges makes the edges slick. Azek is harder to rip as you said, I think there is a lot more plastic in it... Red

Jim,

Nice routing job pal.

I too have starboard in places on my boat. None are loadbearing, as starboard is known to sag in sun & temperature.
My pal on his sailboat used small angle iron on the bottom of one of his loadbearing pieces & it was never a problem.

Your seat size is not that laterally big, so it may never be a problem for you.
Not meaning to sound like a bummer here, I just wanted to let you know.......

Took a couple of days, sure glad Lowe's is just about a mile away. Made 5 trips today just getting things, like a new router bit, some screws, etc.

Now on to the next thing...
