steve aka clueless

i have a 90 23' hunter and i love the boat. i took a couple quick lessons and am trying to learn the rest the hard ( but fun ) way. i have some wires though that come out of the end of the boom and i can not figure out what in the heck they are for. Also they seem as if they are attached to ropes that come out of the bottom of the boom near the mast. i have tried playing around with them but see very little difference. any advice would be appreciated thanks

outhaul and reefing lines.

both the outhaul for the mainsail and the reefing lines run the boom. I am guessing that is what you are refering to. there should be a type of cam cleat(3) at the base of th boom, one for the outhaul, one for the reefing lines, and the third, i dont know.

Third Line

I always assumed the third line was for a second reefing point, if your sail has the necessary eye. Another use for that third line is for a topping hoist which isn't a bad idea either. The use of the first two is pretty well cast by Hunter though. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Wires?

The wires you refer to may have been used to pull the lines through the boom - and not removed.

lines in boom

Steve, The way my '87 H23 was set up when I bought it, it had one wire cable that came out the center of the boom (this is the outhaul, and connects to the end of the sail), and one rope that came out the end of the boom. The rope connects to a line hanging from the top of my mast (the topping lift, used to adjust boom height). Both lines are controlled from cam cleats at the mast end of the boom. I hope this helps... If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to post them! We'll try to help as best we can. Enjoy your boat! --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' jbastien@mm0.net (zero, not O)
