We searched all over Spring Fever's packed up and found that: -
1. the MD6A thermostat is fractionally different size to a 'standard' car engine thermostat
2. The MD6A item begins to open at a lower temperature.

As a result we bit-the bullet and paid the forty-quid or so for the Volvo item (from Volspec) having spoken to people since, if it goes again I'd just strip out the centre and free-flow the cooling water - we did that for three months anyway before getting the new one. Because of its low opening temperature the, Volvo thermostat opens within a few minutes/seconds of starting anyway.

Yes,
I have no thermostat (though of course I do have a cooling water temp
sender) and once the exhaust manifold was cleaned out my engine runs at
max 50 C when flat out in midsummer.

I suppose that in midwinter the cool running engine will use more fuel?

IMHO a thermostat is just one more thing that can go wrong...

I was able to buy one from a NAPA dealer. Take the volvo P/N to them
and give it a try.
