Walter M. Schirra Jr., one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and the only man to fly on NASA's Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, died Thursday. He was 84. He was from Hackensack NJ not far from where I live today Maybe not as well known it seems he also learned to and loved to sail. "In 1984, he moved to the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe, serving on corporate boards and as an independent consultant. His favorite craft became the Windchime, a 36-foot sailboat." Good post

Thanks for remembering a true hero and a fearless man. From the article: "He was credited with shooting down one Soviet MiG-15 and possibly a second." Like I said, fearless. Regards Big Joe

...for that man's accomplishments.. It wasn't only Buzz Armstrong that made "One small step for man but a giant leap...". Wally's work was sure there to help!

One of the true American Heroes

It was Neil Amstrong, and Buzz Aldren (not sure of Buzz's last name spelling). Just to clarify.

He went to my high school

Schirra went to Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, NJ. I was always impressed with a scale that was used for wrestling weigh-ins in our locker room. It was donated to the school by Schirra and showed your weight on not only Earth, but also the moon and a few other planets!
