The "Vent"

Hi Peggie,

I plan to change out the head and vent line on my Cat 30 over the winter lay up. Just bought the Raritan PHC Toilet for 179.00 Annapolis Boat Show Special through Defender. :dance:

I know you recommend a 1" vent. Would this Marelon Thru-Hull work?

Also, you recommend a Uniseal for the tank itself. It looks like the uniseal passes a piece of PVC pipe. How would you connect that to a vent hose? Lastly, any recommendations for hose?

Remember that whatever I.D. size hose you use, the I.D. of the barb will be somewhat- and maybe significantly- smaller than the hose I.D. and you'll lose efficiency due to the restriction.

I just did some math (A=pi x R squared). If you double (5/8 to 1.25)(3/4 to 1.5) (1 to 2 inches), etc., you increase the vent area by FOUR times.

Yep...that's the right type of thru-hull.

If you sail with your rails in the water, put a nice high clam shell over it...open at the aft end.

The pipe becomes your hose barb. PVC pipe wall thickness can vary, so to make sure that the piece you buy is a nice snug fit in the hose, take a piece of 1" hose with you to buy the 6" of 1" OD pipe (be sure to specify OD in the pipe size!). Warm the hose a little, use a little dish soap to lubricate...put it on the pipe far enough to secure it using two hose clamps with clamps 180 degrees apart.

Lastly, any recommendations for hose?

For vent line Shield or Trident #148 is fine.

That doesn't make any sense, Ron...he's not gonna try to put a 1" hose onto a 1/2" barb...he's gonna use a 1" thru-hull...which has the correct size barb to fit a 1" hose.

True. I thought it was obvious he would not miss-size hose and barb, but I guess I didn't word it for easy understanding, and changed my original post.
