While trying to discover the source of an over-winter leak that flooded the boat to about two inches over the sole, I suspected a split cockpit drain hose after the many freeze-thaw cycles we had this winter. My daughter crawled into the lazarette, under the cockpit, while I sprayed a hose into the drain outlet. No leak. Next, I held the hose nozzle up to the drain outlet so the water wouldn't run out. After a few seconds, the locker-crawler yelled "Got it!" Was it the hose? NO, of course not. It was a 3/16" hole in the drain area that some PO had pushed filler into and then covered with a small piece of white Band Aid. Being where it was, I had never seen it. Can anyone beat that for a Band Aid approach?

Heres a good one

A few years before I retired I was really busy, and hired another crew to help me get caught up. Sent him to paint the exterior of a mid level house. When he was just finishing up the trim work, I went by for a walk around. Found several places on the eves where the existing wood was rotted. This guy had put duct tape over the bad spots, and just painted over the whole mess. You never know what some idiots will try, and I don't think anything would surprise me any more. And by the way, he was looking for a job before quitting time.

Nice and Easy...

I think your painter did a commendable job. Most painters would have not painted the rot... or paint around the rot. I think you owe them a beer for their efforts! Send the carpenters around first next time.

He was supposed

Hey Rich, If this guy had proclaimed himself as just a painter, I would have told him to call if he found any thing that needed replacing. He had represented himself to me as a do it all type. Fortunately I have had so many of these idiots work for me,that I always went by and checked on them regularly. I'm sure you know that when you do all round home improvement, the most important thing you have is your reputation. So, it's make sure or loose in the end.

bar of soap

This is a story a friend of mine, who I still consider a mentor, relayed to me from years ago when he used to sail regularly between Hampton Roads and Maine. On the second day of a trip back south, the boat struck an object in the water, which breached the hull at the root of the keel. The first thing he got his hands on to block the hole was a plain bar of soap. It stopped up the hole, which gave him time to fashion a more suitable fix, but he was reluctant to pull the bar of soap as long as it was doing its job. Now I know the man is forgetful and I know the man can be a procrastinator, but I just didn't think either characteristic was so bad that he could have delayed hauling the boat and then forgotten over the next few weeks that a bar of soap was keeping his boat afloat! As such, they were. After a winter passed, during the spring haulout, he discovered his "band aid" fix and reluctantly repaired the breach nearly a year after the fateful day.
