As much as I love the "old sailing ship" sound, I suspect my Edson pedestal steer wheel is NOT suppose to make all the creaking noise wheel I turn it. I'm the third owner of this Catalina 270 ('95) and although in generally good shape, I didn't get much in the way of owner's manuals etc. Anyone know what PM on this wheel I should be doing and how often??? Much appreciated!!! Bill "Salt & Pepper"

also check the tension of the cables

around the steering quadrant. They should have 1 inch of play or so. Mine were very tight. When I eased them off a little, the steering stopped squeeking and was much more responsive!

Wheel or tiller?

Have you located the source of the squeak exactly? I had a squeak that appeared to come from the wheel but in fact was from the tiller/rudder thrust bearing (located in the cockpit, aft of the wheel pedestal) . I just lifted the tiller a bit, cleaned it up and put a bit of grease on the bearing face. Hope this helps.
