The Show Must Go On

I used to attend the Chicago boat show when they had sailboats.

Now I think that they have power boats, campers, and who knows what else. And it used to be at Navy Pier…at least a nautical location. Now it is held at McCormick Place IIRC.

I asked a few of the folding/feathering prop outfits if they were going to be at the Chicago boat show (I was going to order a new Max Prop) and was hoping to get a “show discount”, but none I spoke to were attending.

Not worth the effort to go any more.

For those in the Chicago area, I like to go to Crowleys “Yacht-a-polooza” in the spring each year. Lots of used sailboats to look at, various classes for things like diesel engines, epoxy work, navigation, etc. They also have a big sale on VC-17 so you can get bottom paint before launching.

Beer, brats, a bon fire and some live music round out the festivities! A great way to get the sailing juices flowing after a long, cold winter:beer:

Nice! I will definitely add that to my calendar!

Nah. I can get boat show pricing online avoid the crowds and save the $17 ticky price.
In the water they only showing stink pots and large eruo cruisers I have no interest in.

I went to the Toronto boat show last weekend. There were two sailboat manufacturers represented

The Beneteaus are nice boats, well laid out. I still like my classic plastic though.

It was fun to see "the largest indoor lake" in action. The fun one was the electric jet board flying around the lake. This girl zoomed around for over half an hour, looked like a good workout.

I also went to the Toronto Show. Always look forward to it as a mid-way break between haul-out and launch. Last year went with a purpose, 1 purchase is the NS spin in the avatar. Was good to talk with the various reps in person and see what they had. Disapointed UK rep did not even send a quote after sveral emails. Other purchase was a new dinghy w/ lightwieght console and 30hp. Too much fun.

I get a kick out of those that complain about the shows and lack of sailboats. Most have not nor would not purchase a new boat at a show or other wise. This year Beneteau had 3 boats and talking with the rep supply is very tight still, hence why no boats.

This year was fun just to go down and hang out around the boats and check out a few of the larger trawler types etc. Was good to see bigger boats back and people actually buying at the show. Was also good to wander the vender hall and check out "boat stuf" and talk with a few reps for future purchases. Lithium batteries have come way down and are getting very tempting, chatted with our marina manger, watched the North Channel seminar by Roy Eaton, very interesting, interesting to see BIG outboards on the larger trawler types ( Bene ) giving much more space inside and we did tour the 34' Bene in the pic above, interesting layout but our H33 has a more open feeling below.

Just returned home from the Seattle Boat Show. Had fun. Not a lot of boaters, which was a bit of a surprise.

One interesting tidbit, the Raymarine rep suggested that the company is working on a new remote controller for the Auto Pilot. To be released sometime later this year. Nothing was definite. It sure is a need.

I was offered 2 free tickets today for the Seattle show but passed on them. There aren't very many sailboats and they're outside at a marina with rain in the forecast tomorrow. The rest of the show is across downtown, so a hassle even with shuttles.

Oh, and BTW - here's my pet peeve of boat shows. The companies displaying often want you to take your shoes off before boarding the boats but don't have shoe horns available as a courtesy for when you depart. How ungracious. After having lived in Japan, they could learn something from that. I'm doing them the favor of looking at their product while not marring it. Do me the service of some respect in kind. Stepping off my soapbox now.

No do they have a chair or bench to sit on. Not all of are limber enough to stand on one foot while putting on a shoe.

While I don't have any problem getting my shoes back on, I did wonder about this. Is a chair too much to ask for? I like the idea of a shoe horn, that would be a very simple but convenient addition.

I’m looking forward to getting a pair of those slip on sneakers I see advertised. For boat shows, airport screening, the gym, not doing a header in my closet ...

I was considering making the 3 hour+ drive up, and back. Probably pass on it this year. The steady decline of sailboats has been a trend for the last 20+ years. Younger sailors nowadays would be totally amazed to view this show in the 70's/80's, via a time travel lens...!

TSA Pre Check. Shorter lines, leave your shoes on, faster screening.

Yes there are changes. Yet there is much that is the same. Vendors with new gadgets ie. Radars, sonar, watermakers, dinghies etc. All of the bling we want or need to add.

The Jeanneau dealer announced that they are now a Catalina Dealer at the boat show. The Catalina rendezvous at Roche Harbor this year will have the new dealer available to talk sailboats. I understand they are trying to have a couple of new boats at the rendezvous. This might be a shot in the arm for one of the great events that starts the cruising season.

Waggoner’s Guide is celebrating their 30th year of supporting the needs of Pacific NW Cruisers. The new guide has several useful new additions. For instance there is a complied list of black water dump stations between Olympia to Alaska. This is a first time addition to the guide. Ever pull into to a marina, contact them by VHF and get a reply you will be in slip J31. Where the hell is J31? The marina slips are now alphabetized on the marina charts for all that have been visited by the guide correspondents. This includes the numbering system for the marina where information is available. It is not 100% but it can be a real help if this is your first time visit.

Beneteau and Jeanneau had boats in the Lumen Arena exhibit halls. There were also sail boats at the BELL HARBOR on water exhibit space. This is a site for the new boat buyer, not a used boat exhibit space.

This past September was the first time in over 25 years we decided not to attend the Newport Boat Show. It’s a combined sail and power show, but over the past several year, it has become overwhelmingly a power boat show.
Of the sailboats that have been on display, most were large catamarans and monos in the 50 foot + category. There were only a few in the 30-40 foot class, which is a size that would appeal to most buyers.

Last one for me was the Miami Boat Show about 10 years ago. Mostly Cats and after you look at a few they all are pretty much the same.
Water condos…
Not that there’s anything wrong with that! If you consider that here in the Stuart area any water front home would be several million dollars. A Water Condo would be way cheaper. I don’t think marina fees would be more than waterfront taxes. And you can take your Water Condo to the Bahamas if you please. There are numerous yachts here that never go anywhere. You rarely see anyone on them. I judge that they are vacation homes. I don’t begrudge those people their life style.

The Toronto boat show has an entire room for cottage stuff. Water toys, docks, dock furniture. I bought some cured meats. The cottagers make up a large portion of the show goers. I'm ok with that, I use my boat as a cottage but it is in the city so much easier to get to, and I can take it out of the city when I want to.

A lot of us probably use our boats as a vacation home, with varying frequency of use.
