The flags are tacky. When someone ran lights up the mast, the first time, it was interesting. From then on it was tacky.

I like the large flags that some racers use to fly off of the forestay. They can look pretty cool and they are personalized to the boats.

I don't think its tacky and it has a pretty long history behind it - especially on the 4th of July.

I myself have never done it because I'm just too lazy, but I enjoy looking at OPB who take the time. Good for you!

My YC has a sail past ceremony where we parade in front of the commodore flying all our flags. It is a ceremony I enjoy. Otherwise, what do you do with the racing flags?

Yep, I dress my boat. Do it for holidays, special events and just cause I like to. Tacky? It's your opinion (and I respect that), but I have to wonder why you make a value judgement about someone else's style. I prefer to think that it adds to the color of the day. Also it does have a rich nautical precedent. I just spent a few minutes looking up "dress ship" on the internet. I particularly liked the Google images (on both military and recreational boats). Also the US Power Squadron has a nice bit that explains the etiquette.

I do have to spread out the flags a little more. There is too much free space between the bow and the first flag. I will work on that later. The red flag under the starboard spreader is my Marine Corps flag. I always fly it when I dress my boat.

Not yet but I just purchased my first four flags... my favorite is one with a fish swimming in a martini glass... I'll be flying it this afternoon.... Tack it up my friend.

It's a tradition in our club to fly all the winning flags on the day of the sailpass. SHow off your bragging rights!
