Hey Guys,

I am very excited to finally report that after all these years of coveting you guys and your C-22’s, I will finally be looking for one to buy for myself.

This weekend, we will be heading out to look at a 2007 C-22 Sport, which is exactly the model that I have decided would be my first choice. Any feedback while looking at the boat would be appreciated, what to keep an eye out for and such.
Thanks

Just do not limit yourself to a single geographical market area. Look around for exactly what you want at the best price. Towing a trailer boat a few hundred miles is not that complicated.

Very good advice. I towed my 235 from Florida to Minnesota. A bit extreme but, thats where the boat was.

The fact that you're looking at a 2007 indicates all the normal problem issues won't, or shouldn't be a factor. Rigging shouldn't be an issue, possibly the running rigging, but that's a normal maintenance issue. The keel won't be an issue because you'll have the new improved keel design. The deck-hull joint is also the new and improved design like the MK-II's have. Sail condition might be an issue. I don't know if the "Sport's" used the same optional mast raising system that was available with the MK-II's. HUGE plus if they did in my opinion,(the mast will have a large round hole in the front at the bottom, and two smaller oval holes on each side about 5' up). Hopefully it will come with a galvanized trailer. Always a plus in saltwater or freshwater. Trailer tires are another issue. Don't go by tread, they will be marked on the sidewall with the month and year made. Five years is the accepted maximum age in the trailering and RV world, (I know someone will pipe in with raves about the original tires on their 1986 boat.....congratulations.....).

Let me be the first to welcome you to the family!

Don
p.s. We LOVE photos!

Benny-

The C22 Sport has limited availability, and new Sports sell for a little over $30K w/ sails, trailer, motor, prep, freight.
I have Sport #15582...let me know what sail/hull number you have purchased.

I had figured that a little bit of travel may be involved to find the right boat, as fate would have it, this particular boat was only 90 minutes North of where I live. I haven't seen the boat yet, we will head up on Sunday to check her out. Trying to get all of my ducks in a row now so that I ask the right questions and know what to look for besides the usual things once I see it.

Thanks Rich, yeah I was looking at my photo collection and one of a Sport, and I could see the gin-pole hole, and the baby stay attachment points on the mast. Good to know for other folks interested in a simple, safe, mast raising system.

There and back again, it's worth a little traveling for the right boat. With our first C-22, we traveled from Kansas City to north of Detroit for the boat. I've also traveled from San Diego to Phoenix for our Capri-18, San Diego to Bakersfield CA for our New Design C-22, and San Diego to Oxnard CA for our current MK-II. Like Rich said, the Sport's are probably the rarest version, if you want one, you'll probably have to drive a little, but a 2007 should be SWEET!

Don,
After reading the Threads on this forum for the past few years, I have accepted the fact that there would be a strong possibility that I would have to travel to find the right boat. Over the years, I have searched online all over the place to see what was out there and where. Not much comes along here in my neck of the woods, at least not with the frequency that I have found in other parts of the Country. Towards the end of last Summer, I was eyeing a very nice Catalina 18 that was over in North Idaho (very close to where I live). I found myself considering the 18 but in the end, I made a promise to myself that I wanted a Catalina 22 and to keep looking. My hope is that this boat is what I am looking for but if it's not, then the search will go on! I hope that it does have the Mast raising setup that you and Rich have been talking about. Regardless of the outcome this Sunday (fingers crossed that it is a positive one!) I will be sure to have pictures of my journey!

Good luck Stephen! We enjoyed our Capri-18 for the couple years we had her, but the added room and comfort with the C-22 is substantial. And actually, the mast raising is easier on the C-22 than the Capri-18 simply because the gin pole is longer.

Hi Stephen,
I'd say the biggest thing you'd need to watch out for is other sailors trying to beat you to this boat! As stated before, a 2007 would be a sweet boat! Good luck, and be sure to post pics, we all enjoy seeing a good boat getting the care and attention they deserve!

I am getting a little antsy at this moment, I'll feel a lot better once I am there and can see the boat up close. I should have pictures to share by Sunday Afternoon...

Jerry-
This is a boat (C-22) that I have been wanting for a long time now, I look forward to taking good care of her, in fact, my wife says that I am quite pathetic, the way that I "swoon" over my little Catalina 14.2. She has no idea how bad I'll be once I get my hands on the boat that I've been coveting for years!

Stephen-
The mast raising system is optional, so don't be too disappointed if the Sport you may be buying does not have one.
If you do buy, do consider joining the Catalina 22 National Sailing Association (www.catalina22.org). We offer a Technical Manual (CD and download available) that has over 400 pages of tech tips. You would also get access to some on-line article specifically about the Catalina 22 Sport. There is also a Facebook page for the Catalina 22 National Sailing Association...an easy way to keep informed about upcoming events and other news.
Good luck,

-Rich

This will be known as "the one that got away". I'm a little heartbroken to have just found out that the C-22 Sport that I was going to go look at tomorrow just sold, just received the email from the Seller a little bit ago. Frustrated that I didn't even get a chance to look at her. The Seller told me that he would contact me if the Sale falls through but I'm not going to hold my breath. So close to my first 22 and yet,.. The search goes on.

Stephen,
Sorry to hear, what a disappointment for sure. But your boat is out there. A clean, well maintained C-22 is always in demand, especially this time of the year. As I've recommended in the past, if someone finds a clean, maintained, ready to sail C-22, don't sit on the fence and think about it, or it will be gone.

Good luck as your search continues,

Don
