Out on the boat to pick up after a weekend of daysailing, I noticed the wind in the harbor suddenly pick up. In no time I was sailing.
Our dinghy rig stays on the boat. Rolled up sail and spars in the vee berth, centerboard rudder and tiller in a cockpit locker.
It's a whole different world at this scale. You feel the water all around you, you're in it as much as on it. The effect of wind in a dinghy is felt like an electric shock, there is no delay.
To my eye and lens, this low freeboard Hinckley Pilot looks high sided and way too much work to get under way.
You hardly notice kayakers in a big sailboat. I take them by surprise in my 9'6" cruiser as I come out from behind a boat. They look even more vulnerable, even a bit embarrassed in their tiny boats.
I surprise another small boat. A great day to be on the harbor especially in a tiny boat.
Word gets out on the family text and I have to run by the docks and pick up passengers.
I would have preferred to sail alone, ah but that's life. I can always sail by myself once my wife leaves me.
There is challenge sailing in the inner harbor. We ghost through the wind void beneath the stern platform of a fishing boat. Whoa, what a smell!
Amazingly, the two of us can fit behind the center thwart. We've been cruising back here for over two decades and just sort of fit each other (dogs just happen with us).
Plenty of room forward for an experienced passenger.
