After replacing the engine, alternator, transmission, wiring harness, belts, bolts, prop shaft coupler, prop shaft and so on, I am SO close to being finished with this project and takign Fly Away out on the water where she longs to be.

Today I went to the boat with the new transmission, upon inspection by the builder in WI it was out of shim 1/15,000 of an inch. Which was enough to bind up reverse completely! Who would think such a small measurement could throw out so much! Got the transmission attatched to the bell housing, got the bell housing on the back of the engine and as I was tightening the bolts one stripped out the nut. Then I dropped the socket into the bildge.

Off to True Value.

The alternator needed a new main bolt so I went ahead and got that as well as a magnetic wand, a magnet witha 2LB lifting capacity and a wire grabber.

This solved the problem of the bildge socket and the stripped alternator bolt.

Moving on, we got the alternator tensioned properly with our good friend Mr. prybar and as my buddy was tightening the adjustment bolt for the alternator I hear a loud POP! This pop was the sound of the alternator mounting bracket giving way under the stress of the adjusting bolt! I couldnt believe it! My friend who was tightening it was not working it hard at all! Anyhow, it is at NAPA now awaiting the verdict from the warranty people. I figure I am screwed on this one, and now have a spare parts alternator as well as a brand new unit on order! Yay for me.

So, I have decided I am just toast on this whole rebuild. I have called my mechanic and told him that I want him to finish the install, alignment etc. I just want my boat to work. I have been elbows deep in the bidlge, done 90% of the work on the repower and am just tired. I have been through SO much with this who ordeal from the engine seizing up on me in a narrow long channel to the inseperable prop shaft coupler to the transmission to the alternaotr (again) to the .....???? WHAT'S NEXT?????

I am learning alot, banging many knuckles and deciding on my next tatt, which will definitely have some input from this experience. Maybe a broken wrench over a fluttering sail?

But at least I have a boat to bitch about....

A prybar will get unknown, but mostly huge tension on the bolt. A torque wrench will get proper tension on a bolt.

Prybars are for breaking things.

I did NOT use a prybar to tighten the bolt.

I used a prybar to put tension on the alternator belt by wedging it between the alternator and the engine, thus pushing the alternator away from the engine and putting tension on the belt.

Installed a rebuilt 5411 Universal.

Mechanic is supposed to have finished up the remainder of the work. I went down and spent last weekend aboard, got the new alternator installed, the interior back together.

Much happier now, but now we have TS Danny coming up the shore to contend with!
