I just ordered some New UK Tape Drive Sails and wonder how some of you racing with the swept back spreaders. Are you haveing trouble with the down wind angles? I was not able to buy a Spinnaker yet but it might come next year so we will be racing JAM in the spring. So tell me the bad things about the spreaders. CLiff

hotter angles

plan ahead and sail higher and faster. know your boat and don't assume you are at a disadvantage w/swept shrouds. use more vang to increase sail area downwind russ

Down Wind blues?

Seems there is alot of talk about down wind runs lately. It's been my experience that wind angels greater than 160 degree off the wind boat speed declines substantially. Most polors I have seen support this observation. I find alot of wing and wing running in the non spinn. groups. I often wonder does this sail set up create drag by exposing the most amount of sail area to forward progess of the boat. Would running at 160 and jibing make for a faster coarse? Actually to address your question the spreaders do present and interesting situation. I prefer to not allow the mail to rest on the spreaders at all. Since I like you have invested $$$ in a main, and that option doesn't feel so good no matter how much protection I have applied to the spreaders. In a wing and wing I try to work the main to direct air into the genoa. When using a spinn. the samething applies for me. Remmember to rig a preventor to avoid the embarrassment of an "unscheduled boom move". Kevin

Downwind Speed

If you watched the Americas Cup you'll see they never ever sail dead downwind (DDW) - they always tacked downwind. But they're flying a spinnaker which captures a lot more wind than a headsail. If you're flying just a headsail then perhaps DDW might be faster as you can go wing and wing but realize the main can't be let out perpendicular to the boat so you don't get all the mains sail area. If sailing DDW and not going wing and wing the jib would be almost blanketed. Given the high aspect of a Hunter rig it behoves one to fly a spinnaker as the penalty for a flying sail isn't enough to offset the speed advantage. This assumes that the course is suitable with long enough legs and good apparent wind angles.

use your polars

as created for JAM. Hunters are not J boats, sailing hotter just increases speed but adds much more distance. Increasing vang big time helps increase SA, ease the outhaul

Polar Explanation

Steven, Check out the thread entitled "Sailing by the Polars". It's still on the Ask All Sailors current article list, and it will clue you in. I had the same question. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335
