So I did it. I bought a boat. I have been looking at every boat on the market for about 6 months. I went from $50,000 Carver aft cabins to "restorations" that never finished. I found my boat on Craiglist and instantly knew that I HAD to own the boat.

A 1991 28' Hunter. I know they tell you, don't fall for a boat; there is always a better deal. I couldn't.

So now, I am sailing it up from St. Augustine, FL to Jax Beach, FL tomorrow with the intent to live on it. It is in VERY good condition with a recent survey and the previous owner was a pilot who kept it to pilot(not delta) standards. I have read much about living on boats and my parents, who lived aboard for 2 years, have given me some info.

My question, finally, is are any members on this thread, active liveaboards on such small boats or experienced? Also, I am working on a tight budget; how imperitive is a towing service? I will update wed/thurs with pics of the boat and check back. Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated.

Great news! I think its so cool when someone takes the plunge. Congratulations. I've never lived aboard and have no advice for you. If I were in Fl I'd be begging to crew for the trip. A big day.

Congratulations. A lot of people reading this would probably like to be in your shoes right now. Ignore folks who say it can't be done. Or as they say in these parts, "Screw it, let's ride."

Congratulations, a bold move that millions wish they could make! Solo on an H28 should be cozy but comfortable. A good friend spends the summers on his H28.5 and finds air-conditioning to be his best upgrade. Will you be in a slip or on a mooring/hook? A towing service is only necessary if you leave that slip or mooring. :)

Thanks for the speedy replies. It already has a well running A.C. and good screens in the ports w/ a wind scoop. I have a slip at the local marina; however, I would like to try alittle living on the ball. Suddenly everyone I know is buddy-buddy and says "You gotta take me out." it's hard to explain to them that it isnt a party barge... :)

Get the towing insurance, now. I used it the second day of my delivery home trip. It cost me $130 for the insurance. The tow would have cost $840. It protected my boat, my crew, and my sorry a**.

I'm with Merry P. Get the towing insurance. Towing costs well over $100 per hour that they are away from their dock. You could be deep in debt before they get to you.

Get a spare fuel filter or two, a fan belt and carry basic tools. Stuff happens, especialy on boats which are unfamiliar. Don't let the happenings spoil you adventure. The "Governator" once said anything that doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

I once owned a Hunter 28 and really enjoyed it. It was very beamy, but sailed well on all points. The Yanmar was super. Just give it TLC and you'll never have to worry about getting home, unless of course you put it on the hard. The H28 is roomy down below, has all the conveniences to live aboard. I found the V-berth the better for a good nights rest and used the aft cabin for storage. Congratulations, you've got a good boat.

I get the same statement from everybody, "You've got to take me out". When I extend an invitation, it's always "I've got _______ that day". Fill in the blank with anything you want.

I now tell anybody who asks, "I go sailing every weekend. Give me a call when you have time."

BTAnderson00 - Did youhappen to buy the H28 that was being advertised in Brunswick Florida? If so, I had talked to the owners back in Feb. and thought it was a good deal for the boat.....
