I like to race and the bride is happy just cruising. We both want a vessel in the 40' range. I like to race short handed events since it is hard to find a consistent crew. When the races are over we also just want to sail on Lake Ontario and spend weekends in the many cool towns. A used boat is what we are looking for and would like to hear some comments about appropriate vessels that would be fairly competitive for racing and great for a couple or two couples to cruise on. Thank you Keith

Newport 41

is a good fit for Lake Ontario, I now have a Newport 30. My next boat would be a 41,go to http://CapitalYachts.info/ and check out the photo section for the Newport41's and look at Walkabout's pics and website. good luck

PERFECT BOAT

Any of the late 1980's to mid 1990's Hunter's from 35' up would work well for you. I had an 1987 35' that was a great cruising boat and we would win must of our races. Good luck!

no jboat, beneteau first 40.7

the j boat is a great racer but with low freeboard and your lady not a racer you would be selling the boat soon, look at a beneteau first 40.7 (i am, but need more $$$ dont want a boat payment) check your local club they have a lot of presence here in chicago and seem to be a great racer and a comfortable for cruising too. id be interesed in any other imput on the first series mike

try a jeanneau -- i have a ds40 and while she is a cruiser we can race her - and she is very comfortable as a cruiser -- older Jeanneaus are fairly quick and yet are blue water boats good luck chuck and soulmates

C&C

If you plan on Sailing Lake Ontario look at used C&C, very popular boat on the lake. I have been racing J24 J105 for years and done regattas on C&C 41 etc for equal number of years, the Js are very sporty, a bargain could be in the older J30 but that is not comparable to a 40ft yatch, the C&C are very good boat and nice racers too, look at the C&C regatta on lake Ontario, they also race level at many club, finally you get a fair PRF rating on them. NYC, PCYC etc have nice C&C's talk to the owners. There is a beautiful Beneteau 30 something for sail at PCYC, owner was very keen on racing it, she had extensive work done, down to fairing the hull etc. The boat won or placed every race it entered. regards, a.

A c&c would be a good compromise boat in my opinion. While Newports are good boats I would not buy one for racxing as they are not good light air boats. J boats tend to skimp on creature comforts - they are great boats, but you dn't see them cruising very much. Just curious - where are you on L Ontario? Ericsons are also good cruiser/racers. The 35 has quite the reputation and is a comfortable boat.

Pearsons too

The mid 80s E35-III or late 80s E34 are both boats that would suit your needs very well. They both sail very well to their PHRF. The 34 has an aft cabin setup. The 35 is a more traditional design but has a very roomy Vberth and a separate stall shower. Tim R.
