I wonder why they didn't sell more of these?
Probably because it's good for the environment. Or maybe because it takes effort. Nah, it's the environment reason.

I believe Wednesday is "National Walk or Bike to School Day", I'm going with "it takes effort."

That propeller looks like it came out of the box fan in my garage. Plus I need electric tilt. Didn't your wife tell you that Craigslist was not a good place to spend your time. After my last purchase mine sure did.

put it on and start cranking; you'll soon find out why more weren't sold. Still it would worth having just for the novelty. And the fan blade propeller is hilarious!

Russ. Pick it up and let's go cruise thru the 5knot current of Cattle Pass between San Juan and Lopes Islands. I'll buy the beer and film the experience for the forum on my 15000 pound boat.

It might be fun on a clear calm day.

OK. I'll do the downstream leg, and you get the return. ;)

Sorry, I came in late and the CList listing has been deleted. What kind of outboard was it?

They now make a kayak with a pedal powered propeller. Just like driving a recumbent bicycle. Since legs are stronger than arms seems like a great idea.

I wonder if it would be any more efficient than the fin style of the Hobie Mirage drive?

Think NY Central Park peddle paddle boat vs a penguin being chased by a shark. It is no contest. The mirage drive is unbelievable. We were able to keep up a steady 2.5 knots on Lake Union using the Mirage Drive with out even working up a sweat. But the Sail system is far more fun.

The pedal powered kayak is a Hobie. It can be bought with a sail kit as well. It may be the Mirage referred to. My friend used the Hobie kayak for several years on the Arizona Colorado river for fishing. Great unit! Chief

No it's not the skulking fin style. These new kayaks have a gearbox and propeller. Should be a lot more efficient since the forces will be directed opposite the direction of motion?

I've test driven a Hobie Mirage drive kayak and I really liked it. I would still be interested to know which system would be more efficient considering that a lot of energy is wasted reversing the flippers on each stroke of the Hobie Mirage system. The propeller system also has the advantage of being able to go backwards.

See, I dunno. There are A LOT of aquatic entities propelling themselves with fins/flippers in a particularly efficient manner. :D

And the Hobie Mirage drive derives propulsion on each stroke of the fin, back and forth. It is really two sculling oars sculling back and forth at the same time.

I've never used one, but I know people who have, and I bet you can move pretty fast pedaling and paddling at the same time. And you never miss a tack with a Mirage drive being able to propel you through irons...

With a propeller there won't be any inertial lag from the fins changing directions. The fins need to start from rest, accelerate to max velocity then decelerate to rest again. The prop just keeps spinning and all the force is directed in line with your desired motion.

A loss in performance that likely only a computer could detect.
It's no surprise that someone has produced a conventional propeller driven by pedals. Hobie could have done that too. IIRC part of Hobie's claim for the mirage drive is that it is more weed-less and impact resistant.
We need a race now!
