WHAT A PROBLEM I HAVE! I was out the boat the other day and the shifting cable broke at the trans on the yanmar 2qm15. I figured that it would be no trouble to replace. i have the cables free from the engine and such but i can not get them out of the pedestal and i have unbolted the pedestal cable bracket/holder. Has anyone ever done this or should i just bring the boat to the marina. Input please

cables

If you ever get them loose, tie a tracer line to them so you can pull the new cables through, otherwise you'll have to "thread the needle."

Which Pedestal?

Capt. John: I am not familiar with the Edson pedestal, but the Y/S Merriman has a bracket inside the unit that holds the cable in place. I think that there is one for the throttle and one for the shifter. You should be able to see the screw head on (forward or aft side) the pedestal. Just loosen the screw and the cable should move. BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE CABLE, tie on a fish line to help when you put on the new one (just like Steve O. mentioned). You will need to get the cable for the new one back inside the bracket so everything will work as it did before.

Edson vs. Merriman

I believe the Edson and the Merriman pedestals have a similiar configuration. The clamp on our throttle cable broke at the end of our sail test, when we bought our boat. The mechanic that fixed it for the seller, said he used an Edson cable clamp. As I recall it was not an exact fit, but he was able to modify to fit in our Merriman pedestal... Joe S/V Charis

disassemble and service the pedestal

Regular service is required, so why not get to it and check the health of the stearing lines as well?

update

Thanks for all the input. It is a edson pedestal. I tried all the great suggestions. The cable holder in the pedestal holds both cables. There is a retaining screw on the aft part of the pedestal. but to lift the cables out I must diengage the drive chain. I am to weary to do it myself so it is off to the marina.
