If I had to take a wild ass guess on who torched the boat......I'd be looking at someone who lives within eye sight of the wreck and was sick of looking and waiting for someone to do something....watch how fast it gets removed now......and the 64,000 dollar question is.....is it insured

The city had been taking bids to remove the beached boat while Calabrese scrambled to come up with a plan to remove it on his own. The 48-year-old stood a few hundred feet from the wreckage and talked on the phone Saturday morning while bystanders gathered around the remains of the sailboat.
“That was my home,” Calabrese said, declining to answer questions.
A contractor will be hired to remove the boat as soon as possible, Battalion Chief Worley said.
“We had been trying to work with the owners, but at this point, it is a public safety hazard,” he said.
“It has to go, hopefully by this weekend.”

Now.. watch how quick the "investigation" is over so the boat can be removed.

The only one who deserves any questioning of their "arrogance" here is the skipper who put himself and others in harms way, NEEDLESSLY. The arrogance displayed in his attitude of "we can beat this thing" is inexcusable based on the possible life threatening outcomes to himself, rescuers, girlfriend and cat.
I wholeheartedly agree. This applies to other recent sailing events as well. How do these poor decisions differ in any way to sending a teenager on a nonstop solo circumnavigation for the sole purpose of setting a record? In one case the radio call was made, aircraft was dispatched beyond its range and commercial fishers ceased operations to divert several hundred miles to make a rescue. Weren't foreign naval vessels involved too?

Talk about arrogance!!

I am rather amazed at how well the boat stayed together. I think that it could have been pulled off the beach and lifted onto a barge for transport. I rather doubt that it would be worth the expence.

None of you know the 'real' story & never will. I sailed before Irene.

For the record I was not under the influence while sailing.

The rescue, if you want to call jumping off a boat on to a beach a rescue, did not put rescueers in harms way!!! They never entered the water!

Norfolk screwed me, no lube, the individual that demo'd - stole all recycleble's, with the city of Norfolk's blessing.

The couple are now separated, the skipper is sailing to an undisclosed location, Tidewater & the world has made life difficult for them. Few have been there for them and they get dogged for standing up for us. Pretty sad world we live in today.

I'll be there if you need a helping hand though.

i hope you have better luck from now on

captain Calabreeze!

I truly hope you have better luck from now on, this is a very sad story. I wish you fair wind and full sail on your new boat! And thank you for serving your country and keeping the peace.
Remember, we can't change the past, but you can always improve the future. where there is a will, there is a way.

Good luck!

Too often I saw the aftermath of boats damaged in North Carolina.

In Washington, NC, many will moor in Back Creek as most of the boats are at fixed, not floating docks unless they could get on the hard (travel lift out). What I saw were small anchors, old anchor lines, anchors not driven into the sandy/muddy bottom enough, etc... I heard the weekend warriors not native or from that area telling others what to do.

My advice if mooring out, seek out the experienced locals who know what to do. I did set boats out on the "hook" in the Pamlico River and never lost one from a hurricane. As one indicated, many do nothing to prepare. In my case, I use to get anchors three times heavier than the recommended and two anchors with at least 50 feet of chain, heavy duty anchor line appx 150 each and chafe tape or chafe cover of some kind. The key was to find a holding bottom and again the locals would know that. Throw one anchor to the east and back up digging the anchor in hard and then throw the other anchor to the south and back up diggging that anchor in. Make sure chafe gear is on the anchor line where it goes over the deck. Make sure the swing of the boat does not hit any other boats.

Again, seek out suggestions from the locals as they know, not the weekend warriors.

May ask, Where were you headed before the storm?

and what happened that didn't allow you to get where you wanted?

we always 2nd guess things, and wonder what we should have done different. I followed this, and wondered why you didn't stay put.

-Btw, The burning of the boat was just wrong and mean. Sorry it turned out the way it did... but a least you have a seaworthy boat, now.

Well that's a nice song.

But what I think we would all like to know, (still), is why did you leave a protected harbor/port.

Where were you planning on riding out the storm, and why did you stop where you did.

-If it was just a mistake, or error in judgment. fine, we all make them.

But that was the decision that seemed to seal your fate. just trying to understand...

maybe you had a good reason? like you were forced to leave by the dockmaster?

for someone with as much time under his keel, it didn't make sense to me.
