Sad story gets worse :(

I read a piece today about the owners of this boat. They are both retired military he and his girlfriend. The sold their house and most other items to buy the boat. This is(was) their 'HOME'. He has been told by the authoraties that he has 3 days to get the boat moved. After that they will come in and move it for him and forward the bill to him(them). That I find to be really really heavy handed in this situation. Perhaps someone in government their has taken a liking to the boat and knows they can get it for a song. How can they possibly be expected to get in touch with the appropriate people to get it off the beach in such a short time esp being in a strange and unfamiliar area? Makes me SICK. She may or not float as he said they actually bouced over the rocks on the way into the beach and that may be side down in the sand which may very well be holed. Oh yeah their insurance refuses to cover any salvage costs as they were out in the storm.

If it were me and she wasn't holed I'd try and bring in an excavator and dig out a trench from low tide up to her and then dig around her and when the tide came in try and ease her back out into the water. The rudder could be fixed temporarily enough to allow for steerage under power.

Just way to sad

I read the story - and 12 pages of comments as well. It does look like he doesn't have insurance. Based on the comments not many are on his side either. Very sad.

Re: Insurance? Maybe not!

This boat did nothing to deserve this fate. It looks like they may have fouled the prop on something which led them to try to anchor. I'll bet that boat would have carried them safely to a harbor had they not fouled the prop. I'll pray more for the boat than the owner.

His arrest seems really over the top!

There was a power boat that got loose in Dana Point and ended up on Doheny Beach which is a very popular ad populated beach most of the time. They allowed that boat to sit there for over 2 weeks until the tide could help get it out..... to arrest this guy and make his life even more miserable than it must already be is really cruel. What gives with that.

Kick someone when they are down and 'WIN' NOT

What is the problem with these people? The poor guy is a disabled vet (Gulf War perhaps) and retired. This is everything he has along with his spouse. I really can't believe he is being treated this way ( oh yes I can as I have seen it before many years ago having grown up in Florida ). Try and imagine the strain he much be under at the moment. People wonder why people SNAP sometimes and do monstorous things. I hope he holds it together.

Perhaps everyone here should send an E-mail to those making his life even more miserable and let them know what is thought of them.

It truly takes people 'Completely devoid of Humanity' to Kick someone in this position.

My husband I were just talking about this and the fact that if enough people got together there could be some progress and at the very least, this man would realize that he has some help......come on, if this were any one of us we'd need the help of everyone and anyone. I like your idea of flooding the right places with emaills ..... this is not the time to be wagging fingers, he needs help.

Where is the Boat Going to Go if He Gets Help With it?

It now has a broken keel and a broken rudder the engine was not working before the storm. It does not sound as though he has the financial where with all to pay for it to be on the hard let alone the actual repairs.

I truly feel for the guy and he does need help; for his psychological issues not for his boat. The boat is toast, he needs help getting his life back together and his head straight. I think dragging the boat out into the water where it would be just another derelict would only be enabling the guy. I know it is a harsh veiwpoint but I sincerly think he'd be better off on shore getting help than self medicating on a another hulk in Wiloughby Bay.

Some of the photos appear to show the had gotten prop fouled with some lines from topside--jib sheets? Rick, what's the latest you have on the engine not working before the storm? I think we were all expecting the engine to be working if the owners were trying to make a quick getaway before the storm.

Thanks,

According to yesterday's papers...the engine "had been disabled for some months"....so the lines fouled may have been there a while, or...

The Fouled Line

Looks to me was wrapped around the prop and keel after the boat was on the beach. Looks like he tied off the jib sheets to secure the forestay and furler which had come loose.

After Isabel, we had a Chesapeake 25 (fixed keel) wash ashore on sea grass in our cove. We floated her by running a line across the cove to a winch on a heavy work truck and dragged her off.

Coast Guard CPO Angela Valler said the boat wasn't seaworthy, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't float. If the starboard side of the hull isn't breeched, might be possible to drag this boat off, though I imagine a Hunter 42 would be a bit heavier. And there's also the problem of the breakwaters running parallel to shore. According to online charts (http://marine.geogarage.com/routes) it doesn't look like there's enough water to float her inside the breakwaters, so she'll have to be dragged between them.

After going back and looking at Ken's pictures again, particularly the one at http://www.sailcheers.com/images/Aug 11/IMG_0145-sm.jpg, I'm wondering if that's a hull breech right above the keel.

Not sure. I will go back to the original 14MP photo file and zoom in on that area and post another photo.

If still unclear as to the soundness of the hull, I will go back again to take additional coser photos.

Yep, it did look too coincidentally like a tied fixing and not a tangled/fouled mess after all-- just hard to fathom trying to outrun a storm without aux power.

I had another look at that photo. I magnified it in gimp image editor and while not totally sure I don't think she has been holed. On the other hand even if she is holed I don't think it would be a big issue laying up a temporary patch to make her watertight. I'd judge that she draws 5or 6 feet of water.

Some have mentioned that she is without power. I watched the video as she was foundering. The jig was in taters but she was maintaining direction into the the seas and then suddenly she was pushed sideways and not able to recover. It seems to me she was under power at that point and then the lines fouled the propeller shaft and they lost power.

the boat that was lost in abacos this year lost its keel on the beach, and was holed, but was refloated, and repaired.

it can be done, but not sure who would pay for that... or if its worth it...
