I live an hour away from Buffalo. If you decide to make a move to Lake Ontario and need a trailer move I can help you there. My boat is going to be slipped next year, so my trailer is empty. I can easily come down to you to move into the big lake. Lake Ontario is a big lake and it is a way to go to the Trent. I've heard it can take all day to get through the Welland canal. I would love to do the Erie canal one day. Wish I had more time.

I will definitely keep that in mind. Let's see how everything plays out for me.

Here (Utah) the prevailing winds are usually from the SW, how about there?

My other option would be to take the Erie Canal to the Oswego Canal and then into Lake Ontario and across to Trent but I'm only going to do this once, so if I do I'd like to do the whole Erie if possible.

I like how the Trent-Severn dumps you in Georgian Bay where you can then go onto the North Channel. That whole trip would be one of those things to remember the rest of your life :),

I have been working on the 26S the last few days in Lake Havasu - backyard sailing only.

A while back, someone (Bud Gates?) had posted a picture of the Vberth area with the pads removed and that area just for storage. Over time, "boat stuff" seemed to end up there so I also just made this a storage area - took those pads out to save some weight and its also easier to get access to the lower area. My storage organization now is also just those large bins and they end up getting moved around the boat so they are not at all tied down. I just put a small barier at the edge of the berth platform to keep the bins from sliding out of that area.

This is the finish of the 16 inch LED TV install. You can see the off air antenna in a couple of the pictures (with the pop top up and down) and the reception is fairly good. I am getting a lot of free HD channels with the pop top up or down.

One thing you read in the review of these small LED TV's is that the viewing angle is less than you get with a more expensive larger TV. The viewing angle is not bad.. but the TV really needs to be able to rotate. You can buy something for this TV but its likely stamped steel (heavy) so I made a rotating bar from round 3/8 inch diameter AL - a couple pictures show this. The TV, rotating hardware plus off air antenna probably added 4 pounds total.

In one of the pictures I have the additional 12 volt DVD player that will normally be stashed. It just plugs into the A/V inputs on the TV (easy access with the rotation) and a 12 volt socket. I can also hook up an HDMI cable to watch the Go Pro videos I have taken and I can also hook up a USB stick to watch jpegs.

Current draw (at 12 volts)
TV alone 0.8 amps
TV plus DVD player 1.2 amps

Walt, for some reason I thought the cooler was going to be inside the seat locker.

curious why you didn't open up the stb seat and recess the cooler.

also, how does the hobie go to weather? can you get to a close reach?

-nice TV install!

Location.. that spot where the ice chest went is not used much. This might seem a little odd.. but one of the things I wanted to was to be able to easilly reach over to the ice chest and get milk for my coffee in the morning. "Easy" was important. Im happy with where it is located.

I have the AI but am going to get a TI next year (new seats). I think the TI is a little better than the AI for sailing but in a lot of winds, a conventional sailboat will sail better. Add in pedaling while sailing and things change.. and I like to pedal sail. However.. what they do really well is handle a huge wind range. What we did a few days ago was to do the trip in the picture below. It was about 25 miles total and the Hobies were perfect for sailing this. We were looking for a day with 10 to 20 mph N or NW winds so that the wind and the current are in the same direction. Ive been on parts of this stretch before where I was going straight down wind in white cap conditions - Hobie sail reefed and doing about 10 knots.. just fricken WILD!!! (in a very good way). On the trip a couple days ago, the wind died and we had to pedal a bunch of miles - Hobies also are nice for this.

I have a few kayaks, but I really want one with peddles for fishing.

The outriggers would be an added bonus. might even be able to do some stand up casting.

Can you sail it upwind? or you must peddle to do that?

how many miles was your trip? overnight?

I want to try this: http://www.extremekayakfishingtournament.org/

You can sail these upwind no problem, but your not going to be passing sailboats up wind - unless you pedal which I do often. With pedaling, you can really go up wind. I have zig-zagged up the Colorado river on the AI when I was againts the current and the wind - no problem pedal sailing.

I dont use mine for fishing but I know a lot of people do it, I think the hull even has some molding feature to hold a fishing pole.

trip.. I think we did about 25 miles. Started about 8 AM or so.. got back about 2 PM +/- 1 hour of so.. We were not in a hurry when we had wind.

Took the wife out for a short while, then brought her (the boat; well, the wife too!) home from the marina for the winter! I'll be upgrading this and that (on the boat, not the wife) while at home.

I started figuring out how to put a Mac26D the new trailer. Removed the rear rollers and have formulated a plan for the V bunks in the front. It will be adjustable.
I may use the rollers in the back. Or put bunks running length ways on the roller holders. It will probably have the best support with the double bunks in the back. Looking like a sideways l l on each side.
The other option is to make a V bunk in the back too.
I'm going to beef up the way the U bolts attach with angle iron. It's less bendy than the flat stock.
It kind of snowed here today. Just a little white stuff going sideways in the air.

Walt, I enjoyed every minute of that video. I have never see those before. I mean I have seen Hobies before but those are cool! Thanks for sharing.

I might not of followed all of that correctly but with our ballast tank boats I'd stay with transverse "V-bunks" and not longitudinal ones. I saw one S or D on a trailer that had the longitudinal ones and the boat caved in lengthwise. Might of also been due to that and water inside the boat while it was on the trailer. Still the V-bunks are at right angles to the ballast tank so the loads are handled better. Probably a reason Roger used them on the ballast boats but not the ones before.

When I redid the trailer I wanted to raise the bunks a little and also try and protect the trailer frame more from corrosion so...

.... came up with some spacers and made part of the bunk easier to replace if it did rust. So they became more sacrificial hopefully keeping the frame members in better shape.

I did the same when I added the 3rd bunk at the back of the lengthened frame. If you have a welder it shouldn't be hard or that expensive to make V-bunks for that trailer.

More on the above bunks and stretched frame here....

... and good luck and post pictures :),

Sort of interesting is that I think I could take the 26S on that same route as in the video. In the first of the video there is a railroad bridge that you have to go under and I can easilly lower my mast on the water (mast raising plus permanent crutch). There are some shallow areas where you could either ground the centerboard or rudder - also no problem. If you are not watching you could even get the boat stuck on a sand bar. Also no problem as I can pump the ballast and raise the boat up a couple inches - Ive done this before in Colorado to get off a sand bar. When I can sort of retire.. Im going to spend the winter in Havasu (a great place to do this - rent a sllip for a few months) and one of the things on the list is to do that same run with the Mac.

The attached picture is from a great hike the next day after we did the river run.
